Meet the Board
Cathy Cook
How many years have you been part of the MECS community?
2.5 most recently, and 13 years around 1988-2000.
How long have you been on the MECS Board?
I've just started on the Board in the last few months.
If you could holiday anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I can't choose. Somewhere near a beach, or in the bush.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Saint Francis of Assisi!
From what I know of him, he had a deep love of God, a heart for the church, and he turned his life of privilege up-side-down in wanting to live and care for the poor and those on the margins of society. I'm inspired by Francis' view of creation - one that is full of hope, delight and gratitude, and how he kept God at the centre, as creator, sustainer and provider. His life is a witness and inspiration to me.
What AFL team do you support?
Western Bulldogs. We lived down the road from their home ground for years - but I'm more of a cricket person - any version: local, international, BBL, ODI and Test. There's nothing quite like the sound of a cricket game as the backdrop to summer!!
My favourite things
In no particular order: coffee, watching BBC drama (Call the Midwife, Shetland etc), books, time being crafty (linocut printing mostly), writing, reading, time with the kids and friends. Being outdoors - gardening, walking etc.
What do you love most about MECS?
The spark that's created here in the midst of the learning and living/doing - the academic and the relationships, the classes and community. I think that spark is the love of God, and the sincere active hope of staff keeping God at the heart of education, that equips students for all of life: to be critical thinkers and inquisitive learners, to care for community, and to contribute and serve in their own unique path.
I love the heart MECS has for wanting to help grow the whole person in partnership with families, and the backdrop of that at the bottom of Mount Dandenong, on the fringe of the city and the edge of the Yarra Valley is just beautiful.
