Exploring Creativity with Helen Chebatte

Year 8 Students Meet the Author of 'Bro'

Last week, our Year 8 English classes had the exciting opportunity to meet Helen Chebatte, the author of Bro, through a live Teams presentation. Bro has been part of our English program for four years, and it continues to be a text that students connect with and enjoy, engaging deeply with its themes and characters. This was the first time our cohort has been able to speak directly with the author of a book we are studying, which made the experience both memorable and meaningful. Helen shared her inspiration for writing Bro, her experiences as a writer, and the themes she wanted to highlight through the novel. She also responded to a wide range of questions, some prepared by classes beforehand and many asked on the spot during the session.

The session was highly interactive, with students from across Year 8 asking thoughtful questions about the characters, conflicts, and issues raised in the story. Helen’s warm and honest responses offered valuable insights into both the novel and the writing process. It was a unique and inspiring opportunity for students to hear directly from the author herself, and it has enriched our study of Bro moving forward.
