Study Tour of Japan

A Journey of Culture and Connection

Nineteen MGSC students are currently having an unforgettable experience on a study tour to Japan. We spent our first three days in Tokyo, where we immersed ourselves in the energy of one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Highlights included exploring historic temples, navigating the bustling streets of Shibuya, and sampling delicious Japanese cuisine.

From Tokyo, we travelled to Nagoya for a week long stay at Nakamura Senior High School. Our partnership with Nakamura began in 2006; however, this is MGSC’s first trip to NSHS since 2019. We were warmly welcomed into the school community and had the chance to take part in classes, cultural activities, and school life alongside our Japanese peers. This experience provided invaluable insights into Japanese education and daily routines, as well as opportunities to form friendships that transcend borders.

A key part of the tour has been the homestay experience. Each student spent a week with a Japanese host family, which offered a unique window into Japanese culture and everyday life. From sharing home-cooked meals to participating in family traditions, the homestays have been a highlight, leaving lasting memories of kindness, generosity, and cultural exchange. We farewelled our homestay families on Monday morning (there were many tears!) and travelled to Kyoto, our final destination before the return trip to Melbourne. We have spent the last few days exploring the beautiful history of Kyoto - yesterday, we walked 20,000 steps in 35 degree heat!

The study tour has not only deepened our understanding of Japan but also strengthened our confidence, independence, and global outlook. We have embraced every challenge and opportunity, and we look forward to seeing how this journey shapes our learning and personal growth in the years ahead.
