History Hub
Our annual school magazine has been an important part of our school since its inception. From the outset our staff and students were keen to record the highlights of the yearly calendar of events, and from 1955 until 1961, this journal was called the Magazine of the Mentone Girls’ School.
From this period until contemporary times, this publication has featured students’ writing, sporting, academic and musical achievements, showcasing the work and broad curriculum range we are renowned for. Throughout the swinging sixties, the book was referred to as DRACO until there was another change in the 1970s when the name Mentone Girls’ High School Magazine was adopted. During this decade there were some outlier years with 1972 publishing a broadsheet titled Loud Mouth and 1974 and 1976 not producing an annual record of the school’s activities and noteworthy achievements. In the former year a school calendar was published in lieu of the magazine.
Brainstorm was christened as the new name in 1979 and this survived until 1998 when it became known as Making Waves which is a pun on our seaside location. This remains our current moniker. In the 1990s the Art Department, notably Sue Kinneally, became actively involved in designing unique front covers which linked with the character and culture of our school and we took advantage of the technological advances to add some polish to the formatting and appearance of this product.
We currently have a dedicated person responsible for the magazine’s production, and with the help of a grant from our PFA, all our archived copies have been digitised to ensure a pristine, accessible and accurate record of our history for posterity.
