In Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 4, we explored Sports signs in Auslan! We learnt and practised signs such as sport, ball, soccer, football, basketball, tennis, rugby, netball, cricket, athletics, swimming, team, win, and lose. We also watched the Deaflympics, which helped us understand how the Deaf community connects through sport and visual communication. In week 2, we played Fruit Salad outside, with each “fruit” representing a different sport—students ran from the orange wall to the basketball courtline and back, showing great energy, teamwork, and sportsmanship as we celebrated our winners.
In Week 3, we tested our knowledge with a fun Kahoot.
Reading the top prompt, students need to identify which image shows the correct sign. Students had to stand under one of the 4 colour signs (stuck around the room) to show me which image they thought displayed the correct sign.
During this activity we revised all of our sports signs and ‘true or false questions’ to encourage their critical thinking about Deaf culture.
Afterwards the Preps sang the Auslan songs they’ve learnt throughout the year. The Year 1s and 2s joined in the excitement with our very own Mini Deaflympics, rotating through sports on laminated A3 courts in teams of three—each game helping us practise how to sign the sport it represented!
How can I help?
Ask your children to sign to you what their favourite sport is in Auslan, and encourage them to teach you the signs they are learning!
