Year One Assembly Highlights
Last Friday, the Year One cohort held its first assembly of Term Four. It was wonderful to see so many families join us to celebrate the achievements of our students. Eve and Aradhya proudly led and organised the assembly, demonstrating growing confidence and leadership.
Matias and Teresa from 1B delivered a respectful Acknowledgement of Country, reflecting the thoughtful work we’ve done during morning circles and our ongoing respect for, and connection to, First Nations peoples.
We also congratulated our RISE Award recipients, who consistently demonstrate our school values and inspire their peers to do the same.
To conclude the assembly, 1F students delivered an impressive drumming performance, showcasing their learning in Literacy by performing The Walrus and the Carpenter. We all enjoyed the energy and expression they brought to bringing the poem to life.
Literacy
Students have been reading and spelling both one-syllable and multisyllabic words featuring the grapheme–phoneme correspondences (GPCs) ‘oo’, ‘ew’, ‘ue’, and ‘u_e’, representing the /oo/ and /yoo/ sounds.
In Morphology, students began exploring prefixes. They were introduced to ‘re-’, ‘pre-’, and ‘un-’, meaning again, before, and not, respectively. Students continued to build their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension through reading passages and writing dictated sentences.
Reading and Writing
Students have been immersed in the world of poetry, exploring and appreciating a range of poetic forms. They learned to identify rhyming words and count syllables while creating their own limericks and haikus. We also discussed the cultural significance of these forms and how rhythm, repetition, and structure can create meaning and emotion in writing.
Numeracy
Students continued to deepen their understanding of place value and learned how to organise and work with large collections efficiently. They explored ways to group objects equally, applying skip-counting strategies to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Alongside these topics, students continue to develop their number sense and practise fluency with basic addition and subtraction facts through hands-on games and problem-solving activities.
Buddies
Our Year One students always look forward to their Buddy sessions! This program provides meaningful opportunities for collaboration across year levels, helping students strengthen learning and build new friendships.
This fortnight, Year One students were supported by their Year Five Buddies as they explored large numbers and deepened their understanding of place value in Numeracy. In Literacy, they shared and created poems together. While the younger students benefited from extra guidance, the Year Five students also developed valuable skills in teaching, explaining, and modelling their learning. These cross-campus experiences continue to strengthen our sense of connection and community at NMPS.
