Little Miss and Mr Men
Writing
We have been learning to create our own narratives inspired by the Little Miss and Mr Men series written by Roger Hargreaves. Students have used a familiar narrative planner to consider each story element including a main character with a descriptive name, where they live, the problem they face, the action they take to solve it, and the final resolution. We are now publishing these as miniature books, carefully editing and illustrating each page to captivate our readers. You might like to enjoy sharing stories at home and noticing how authors solve problems creatively in their books.
Reading
We have continued to explore how letters and sounds work together by learning more about phoneme and grapheme correspondence. We have been looking closely at how certain suffixes and prefixes change the meaning of words, such as how -al and -ial can transform nouns into adjectives (for example magic to magical, face to facial). We have also investigated -le endings in words like candle or table. Each lesson, students are practising reading aloud with a partner, using expression, cadence and tone to bring their texts to life. Encouraging students to use their character voices when reading their favourite books at home can build confidence and fluency.
Mathmatics
We have been exploring multiplication and division using a range of visual strategies. Students have been learning to use arrays to organise equal groups and see the total clearly. We have practised splitting larger arrays into familiar groups such as 2s, 5s and 10s to make the equations easier to solve (for example 7x5 can be thought of as 5x5 and 2x5). We have also been using number lines to skip count in equal steps and drawing equal groups to show how multiplication and division are connected. These strategies help students build confidence and flexibility when solving number problems. When opportunities arise at home, such as sharing items equally or counting objects in groups, students may enjoy applying these skills in real life situations.
Digital Technology
We have been learning the basics of coding and digital design. Students used Keynote and Sketches to trace a photo of themselves, design a background, and animate their drawing to move around the screen. This creative process encourages both digital confidence and problem-solving skills, and the students have been very excited to watch their characters come to life.
