From Kaajal, Year 4 teacher

Civics and Citizenship

This term is flying by, and the Grade 4s have been busy learning, creating, and exploring! The students have been working hard to build on their existing skills while tackling new challenges with enthusiasm. It’s been a fantastic start to the term, with plenty of exciting things already happening—and even more to look forward to! Here’s a glimpse into what 4D has been up to…

Reading

In Reading, the Grade 4 students have been exploring visual literacy, learning how images and text work together to persuade an audience. They have enjoyed analysing a range of advertisements, identifying the target audience, slogans, and persuasive techniques used to capture attention. Now, it's their turn! At the end of this week, students will be presenting their own ads that they have created!

In reading, grade 4 has been making ads like TV ads, and posters. Some ideas groups are doing include footy, dino nuggets, perfume and more! We have to make sure our ads are eye-catching, have bold letters and have a target audience. We look forward to seeing everyone’s work on Friday.

Writing

In Writing, students have been crafting descriptive pieces about a special item of clothing. They have worked on using sensory details and figurative language to bring their writing to life, describing not just what their item looks like, but the memories and emotions connected to it. Teachers were absolutely blown away by the incredible pieces of writing that were written!

This term in writing we have been having lots of fun! One exciting thing we have been doing in writing is an item of clothing that is special to us. For example something that is special because we have lots of memories with it. We really enjoyed this and we hope to do something like this again in the future. Doing this task helps us to understand that other people have different likings and memories.

We had a lot of fun doing this activity!

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of multiplication and division, using different strategies to solve problems and explain their thinking. They’ve been working on open-ended tasks and worded problems that challenge them to think flexibly and show their reasoning. We also explored patterns.

In the last couple of weeks in maths we have covered division, multiplication and patterns. Our favourite topic was division and we learnt about a cool strategy for division called an area model. In multiplication we learnt about mental strategies and we revisited what we learnt in term 2 and 3. We also did patterns and we learnt there are 2 types of patterns called repeating patterns and growing patterns we focused mostly on growing patterns. For an extra we have started weekly tournaments on an app called times table rock stars and if you've reading this newsletter for a while you'll know what that app is in the tournament, cohorts will compete in a battle of who's better at times tables in the first week 4A won.

We have just begun our new Civics and Citizenship unit, where students have started learning all about communities—what they are, why they’re important, and the different roles people play within them. The Grade 4s have been exploring the idea of belonging and how communities work together to support and include everyone. Through discussions and activities, students are beginning to understand that being part of a community means showing respect, cooperation, and responsibility. It’s been wonderful to see them make connections between their classroom, school, and the wider community around them.

This term  has been very interesting so far. We have been learning about communities. Everyone belongs to a community. A Community is a group of people that share the same interest, culture, nationalities, beliefs or race. What communities do you belong to? We also started learning about rights and responsibilities and the differences. between the two. For example, we have the right to use the bathroom at school and it is our responsibility to keep the toilets clean.

On Monday last week, Abdi Aden came to speak to us about his experiences with racism. He told us about his personal struggles with life. He also talked about how he had to survive and flee his county because of a terrible war. His message to us was to always be kind, respectful and grateful. He has inspired us to be an understander.

Finally, last week the Grade 4s got to celebrate winning the book week displays by having a cohort party! We would like to thank Alice for organising a fun session for us full of games, riddles and crafts.
