Year 3 News

From Lizzie, Year 3 teacher
Poetry, newsletters and news reports
This term in writing the Grade 3 students have been experimenting with some new genres. We began the term by writing "Breaking News" stories about our Term 3 holidays. In week 2 the students then chose a real life news story from Kids News to record a News Report. Students then filmed using a green screen and each class created their own Grade 3 News program.
This week students have been crafting their own poetry. After reading lots of examples of the past couple of weeks it was time to put pen to paper. Check out some of the examples below:

In Hawaii a bird called a honey eater is getting a disease from mosquitos. Its almost wiped out an entire population. So lots of people are trying to (such as the ABC) are trying to save them. They only live in Hawaii and there used to be 50 species but now there are only 17. Recording the news report felt like being in the real news because I had the tie and the microphone. I also got to see myself on the TV. It felt good to see how I sent, and I think I went well.

In poetry I have mostly been writing about what I feel strongly about. I don't feel like the world is doing enough to fix racism and for justice and all of that stuff. I also write about my strong feelings and how I feel about things. For example if I'm alone one day and feeling lonely or if I'm angry. And when I am out in nature I write about nature. I've also written a poem called being stressed, it's called Memories because I was remembering.
Memories
Tears rolled down my cheek
As happiness is lost
For now I seek memories flooded in my brain
Memories of anger and pain
Rain drops patter
My emotions feel like they don't matter
My time has come to cry memories of all the times I lied
My feeling is strong
I feel like I don't belong
I sit and weep
For this step is big
Like a leap
I am feeling down
But I love my town
For now I stress
Later, I will worry about the rest

We think they were really fun lessons. It was great how we had to memorize. It was cool that we got to use a real green screen. We got to watch each other perform. I think that was really good.

My favourite thing about writing poetry was you get to try all kinds of poems like haikus, shape poems and rhyming poems.

Writing poetry is a fun way to express how I am feeling.

I really liked writing haikus because they are short and fun to write. I wrote a haiku about my bed and how comfy it is!
