Reading
We continue unpacking texts using the reciprocal reading roles of predictor, clarifier, questioner and summariser. We have used our class novels The Hobbit (3/4A) and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (3/4B) as well as a number of group and individual texts.
Writing
Our unit on persuasive writing is coming to an end. Students have been busy creating individual persuasive pieces on a variety of topics including;
- Why the school should have a soccer pitch
- Why I should have a pet axolotl
- School should have a gaming class
- People should stop littering
- Plastic pollution should be banned
We have also created a shared persuasive text as a class, with students working collaboratively to choose a topic, brainstorm arguments, support these arguments with evidence and incorporate persuasive devices such as; hyperbole, rhetorical questions, and inclusive and emotive language. In small groups we chose our strongest arguments to fit the topic and then supported these with reasons to justify our stance. Alyssa and 3/4 wrote a piece on why Education Should Be Free while Anastasia and 3/4 B focused on why Each Class Should Have a Class Pet. You can read the two class persuasive pieces in this issue of the Dhumbajerri.
Maths
We have wrapped up our unit on angles with students identifying that angles are measures of turn with each angle being made up of a vertex and two rays. We investigated ways to classify angles based on their size and practised measuring angles using a protractor.
Our next unit will focus on Multiplication - see attached timetables practise resources to join in the fun at home!
Gardening
This week in gardening we looked at fungi and how they differ significantly from other plant life. Emily talked to us about the different types of fungi that we might encounter and were able to look at some under the microscope. We drew mushrooms and helped out with some gardening and general maintenance in the garden. Emily has also presented each class with a Gourmet Mushroom Grow Kit. We have set ours up and are eagerly waiting to see how they grow. 🤞
Book Week - Door decorating/ Writing 50 word stories
With book week fast approaching we have been getting into the spirit by writing 50 word stories and decorating our classroom doors. Both 3/4A and 3/4B have chosen their class novels as the inspiration for their door design. Have a look at Middle-earth and Narnia at the end of the 3/4 corridor.
34B Wellbeing - Growth Mindset & Perseverance
In our classroom, we have been taking a deep dive into what it means to show a growth mindset, the power of ‘YET’, perseverance and teamwork. To bring these ideas to life, the students were handed a massive group puzzle to solve with very little instruction. Our first attempt was certainly a test of patience! Afterwards, we gathered to reflect on the experience, recognising that trying something new for the first time is often the hardest part—and that mistakes are simply valuable clues for how to do things differently. Armed with a fresh strategy, our learners tackled the challenge a second time using clear communication, inclusion and kindness. Seeing everyone work together to achieve their goal was a wonderful moment of shared pride and growth!

Education Should Be Free
Imagine if every morning you wake up so excited to go to school, but never being allowed to go because your family can’t afford it. Did you know that 273 million children miss out on education per year? Do you really want this to continue? Education should be free because everybody has the right to learn, it’s important to be educated, it provides equality, it also provides an opportunity to socialise and you can put more money in your savings account. Firstly, absolutely everybody should have the right to learn because it is unbelievably unfair when people can’t go to school. Countless amounts of students are missing out on education because they can’t afford school or university. Don’t you think that we all deserve to go to school or university no matter what? We will all be able to access free education as a right. With free education for all, we can make our world a better place. Secondly, it’s important to be educated. At school we al learn life skills that can help every amazing person have the best life any human on earth has ever had. Who wouldn’t want that? If you have kids, when they go to school you will be pleased to know what they are going through. School will help everyone when you get older, it can help you look after kids ( if you have any ) and you will have a good future! Do you want the best life ever? Thirdly, free education provides an equal opportunity for us to become what amazing people we are in our wildest dreams. Students are given an equal opportunity or chance to go to school, and we all get the same amazing chance to succeed. Isn’t that something everyone wants? Education doesn’t need to be based on family money. See, education should be free!!!! Fourthly, free education will provide an opportunity to socialise and build social skills. It will help people avoid loneliness (or being lonely). Being lonely will have humungous effects on people's lives and mental health. Do you really want kids to be sad and lonely? Making friends at school will cure the sadness in the lives of young children. If we all have better mental health we will all have better lives. Isn’t better mental health something we all need? Lastly, we can put more money in our savings account (save for things we need or want). Who wouldn't want more money in their savings account? If education is free you can buy essential things (water and food). We can also help rescue the community by giving money to charity. It teaches you the superb skill of saving up. Free education means more saving for anything in the whole wide world. In conclusion, education should obviously be free because everybody has the right to learn, it’s important to be educated, it provides an equal opportunity, as well as an opportunity to socialise and build social skills and it puts more money in our savings account. We need to put an end to this madness. How can you get to sleep when there’s a whole world full of talented students missing out on further education?
