1/2 A Mainstream 

Integrated- What we have been up to: 

Last week, the 1/2s explored sound through a range of experiments. We learnt about how sound travels by vibration through air or other mediums. We felt the vibration of our vocal chords while speaking, we felt the vibrations of a phone ringing through a box, we listened to metal tapping other mental surfaces through coat hangers and we felt the vibrations of speech through a balloon! We encourage you to have a go at these experiments at home!

Maths: We have been continuing our exploration of multiplication and division with a classroom and school array hunt . Students have been able to describe these arrays and categorise using multiplicative language and thinking. We continued our unit on measuring, and students got to compare the mass of two objects by hefting and weighing on a balance scale. We then placed them on a least to greatest mass numberline.

English:

Students are now moving into the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.4 sounds in phonics. These sounds include: a-e as in gate, a as in acorn, i-e as in five, i as in find, ci, cy, ce making the sound ‘s’ and g making the ‘j’ sound when followed by e, i, and y.

Students are enjoying exploring narratives, and writing stories about different seeds. We have also been looking at starting our stories with sizzling starts and including sentences beginning with subordinating conjunctions - before, after, when, and if. 

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

On Friday September 4 we are looking forward to performing our shadow puppet retells for our families. Please join us in our classrooms at 9:30am for our performances. These will celebrate our learning in Integrated and literacy this term. Look out for the Compass post.

In writing, we are moving into a different way of storytelling - poetry! We are looking forward to creating our own poems inspired by light and sound in the upcoming weeks! 

Book week is next week and the assembly is on Friday 28th August. We are looking forward to seeing all the characters rock up tomorrow!

Over the next couple of weeks students will continue the multiplication and division journey. They will learn that multiplication and division is commutative and that they can use arrays to  count collections. You can continue to look for arrays at home. Asking students to look for arrays in their homes and communities turns students’ eyes on to seeing the mathematical structures throughout their environments. Students will be starting a new unit on measuring volume and capacity. Lots of cooking and measuring would be great to support this learning at home.

Swimming for all students in Foundation, Year One and Year Two will occur in week 9 (Monday 7th - Friday 11th September).
