R U OK? DAY
Thursday 10th September 2026
R U OK? is a national suicide prevention charity and registered public health promotion that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times.
To celebrate R U OK? Day at SSC we have a number of exciting events scheduled for the week beginning the 7th September, including a raffle with some great prizes, Headspace visit, a staff breakfast sponsored by Moonee Valley City Council Youth Services as well as our usual Wellbeing Team stand at lunchtime. More information to come…
But the 10th of September shouldn’t be the only day we check in with our friends, family, colleagues – Life is every day so ask R U OK? ANY day.
PROACTIVE POLICING UNIT PRESENTATIONS
We were very fortunate to have the Brunswick Proactive Policing Unit attend SSC to deliver presentations to our Year 10 students on Bullying and our Year 8 students on Violence, Weapons and Assault. The presentations covered some important information around what these issues look like, the impact and physical, emotional and legal consequences that can occur as a result. The health and wellbeing of our students are our highest priority, and we hope the students found the presentations beneficial.
This is what our students had to say:
Year 8 – The active policing session was very interesting for young students like me and very helpful. We learnt about self defence and weapon laws.
Year 10 – The proactive policing session provided lots of useful information about the consequences and impacts of bullying. It was very interesting in the sense that it provided us with new facts about the extent of how seriously bullying is taken and how to be an upstander.
LOOKING AFTER PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELLBEING DURING ADOLESCENCE
We know that adolescents experience rapid physical, emotional and cognitive growth, which means they need to develop healthy habits to support their wellbeing.
Food: Adolescents need a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and dairy foods. Regular meals and healthy snacks provide the energy and nutrients needed for growth, learning and physical activity. Adolescents should aim to eat a variety of foods and limit highly processed foods and sugary drinks.
Water: Staying hydrated is essential for concentration, physical performance and overall health. Most adolescents should aim to drink 6–8 glasses of water each day, with more needed during hot weather or when participating in sport and exercise.
Exercise: Adolescents should participate in physical activity every day. Exercise helps strengthen muscles and bones, improves fitness, reduces stress and supports positive mental health.
Sleep: Sleep is essential for growth, memory, learning and emotional regulation. Adolescents should aim for 8–10 hours of sleep each night. Establishing a regular sleep routine and limiting screen time before bed can help improve sleep quality.
Developing healthy habits during adolescence can have a positive impact on physical health, academic achievement and overall wellbeing.
