Greek- Hellenic Museum Excursion 

On Friday 7th of August, the Greek senior students at Strathmore Secondary College, (Years 10, 11 and 12) attended a workshop at the Hellenic Museum which is the former Royal Mint. 

Below are some insights from the students:

As part of our Greek studies, we had the opportunity to visit the Hellenic Museum in Melbourne. During the excursion, we explored a variety of fascinating Greek artefacts and exhibitions, learning more about Greece’s history, culture and heritage. The visit gave us a deeper understanding of the importance of Greek traditions and allowed us to connect what we learn in the classroom with real historical objects and stories. It was an enjoyable and memorable experience that brought our Greek studies to life.

We went to the Hellenic Museum, and we had an excellent tour guide, Tom. He took us around to look at ancient Greek artifacts, and we did a workshop where we learnt and shared our research on the artifacts. We then walked to Stalactites and had an amazing lunch. We also went to the Parliament to look at the architecture.

I enjoyed listening to the guide, Tom, and how he was explaining all the different displays and exhibits. Something new I learnt was the board game he taught us which was used for soldiers to develop their battle strategies.

It was a great experience. We learnt about some of the history from our culture and how Greece became as we know it today. After that, we explored the city and saw the structural inspiration taken from the Acropolis before going for lunch at Stalactites.

It was an amazing experience. We learned about our culture and how our Greek ancestors lived in the past. We were shown some of the vessels used in antiquity such as drinking vessels and oil urns. Helmets and full armour were displayed which was fascinating. Lunch was at Stalactites, an institution for those who love their Greek food! 

-Jonah (Yr12)

I learnt how to play an ancient Greek board game which is like chess. The ancient Greeks called it Petteia. We used pebble pieces on a squared board. The aim of the game is to sandwich enemy pieces between two of your own. Our educational guide spoke about the replica statues found around the space and where the real ones are housed. He was very informative and I was impressed by his ability to speak ancient Greek.

After the museum we went for Greek food at Stalactites. The whole day ran smoothly and was well timed.
