RIDING TO SCHOOL

We have received numerous phone calls from concerned residents in our community in reference to students with bicycles, scooters and e-scooters.

BICYCLES

We ask parents/carers to talk to their children about riding safely on their bicycles and in particular the wearing of an appropriate helmet. Some students wear helmets but do not do the buckle up under their chin. Any students found not to be wearing helmets or not wearing them correctly will have their bicycles impounded by the school and then parents/carers will be called to pick them up.   Please remember that students must always walk their bicycles when on school grounds.  Please see the Department of Education Cycling to and from School Policy. https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/cycling-and-school/policy

SCOOTERS/E-SCOOTERS

As per the school diary, skateboards and scooters/e-scooters are not allowed at school. As per VIC ROADS, if your motorised scooter:

  • is powered by a petrol motor; OR
  • has an electric motor with a power output of greater than 200 watts; OR
  • has a speed capability of greater than 10 km/h

then it cannot be legally used on a road or any road related areas, including footpaths, shared paths or public areas (unless it meets the standards for registration and is registered). The fine for riding an illegal device in a public area is $909. Other penalties may also apply.

IMPORTANT: Most newer model e-scooters exceed these thresholds and do not meet the standards for registration, and therefore cannot be used on Victorian public roads or footpaths at this time; they can only legally be ridden on private property.

If your scooter is legal (i.e. has no more than 200 watts of power and is not capable of travelling faster than 10 km/h), then you must follow the same rules as for human-powered scooters and wheeled recreational devices (below). This scooter is still not allowed at school.
