ALUMNI News

There are a great many Frankston High School alumni out there living successful, interesting lives and students have been lucky enough to be visited by several of them already this term.

SPORTS COACHING

Last week, Sports Coaching students spent a session with Frankston High School alum Cass Cain. After finishing school in 2017, Cass went on to earn her Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science and Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) over four years at Deakin University.  Along the way, she secured internships for herself in sports marketing, showing impressive initiative and drive. She is now in her dream job at TGI Sports Marketing in the area of AFL talent management.

Cass spoke in detail about her career trajectory, the different people she works with and about the wide range of opportunities available out there linked to sport. Cass also introduced the concept of the elevator pitch, i.e. a brief, persuasive speech you might make about yourself, your merits and experience to someone influential whose attention you might have for a short time. The students broke into groups to brainstorm how they might be able to introduce themselves before having a go at their own elevator pitch in front of their peers, learning how hard it can be talk about yourself and that it’s a skill worth practicing. Cass was able to explain the relevance and importance of this kind of pitch with reference to the networking she has done and its effectiveness.

YEAR 10 FOUNDATION MATHS

Frankston High School 2010 alum Alana Joynes spoke to Foundation Maths students about what it took for her to able to purchase her own home at the age of 19, moving on to purchase two other properties in the years following. Now a mortgage broker, Alana was able to speak about the process of credit checks and debt disclosure obligations, counselling students to stay away from car loans and ‘bad debts’ such as afterpay.

YEAR 10 CAREERS

Ahead of their upcoming work experience, the Year 10 cohort here at Frankston High School heard from alumni in three very different fields as part of a Careers Assembly.

While their career journeys have little in common, the consistent message from these alumni was that no career path is clear cut and it’s perfectly fine not to know what you want to do yet. Sometimes detours are in fact the best path to take, and a great way to discover and learn about new opportunities. Thanks to Renee Fox, Robert Bleumink and Lisa Fowler for coming back.
