From the Year 2 Classroom

What another great two weeks we have had in Year 2.

In our classrooms, we have continued to work hard across all learning areas and should be very proud of the effort being shown. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence, independence and persistence with their learning tasks. It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the term. As the weather starts to get a little chiller, we ask that students are dressed in the appropriate clothing, especially in the mornings when it is quite cold. Just a reminder that it is an expectation that all students are reading at home. We want to foster a love of reading, so students are encouraged to get readers from school or read appropriate texts from home. We expect to see each student’s reader diary on a Friday.  We have asked that all Year 2s bring in a special toy or something that is special to them by Friday as we need to use this for a writing activity. Next Thursday 27th May, we have our school cross country at Vic Park from 11.30am. We thank families for their ongoing support and encouragement at home. Your partnership plays an important role in your child’s learning journey.

In Literacy, we have been learning about the skill of visualising. Visualising is important because it helps us make a picture in our mind. We have also been building our comprehension skills by responding to a range of picture books during our Storybook lessons. We especially enjoyed Collecting Colour, as it helped us build our understanding of the process of weaving and creating in the indigenous culture. As part of our learning, we have been writing our own narrative stories, imagining that we are swimming in the ocean and describing what we can see, hear and feel. We have been focusing on using descriptive language to make our writing more engaging and interesting for the reader.

In Maths, we have been learning about place value and the value of digits up to four numbers. We have also been practising ordering and reading larger numbers, as well as partitioning numbers from smallest to largest and placing them correctly on a number line. Next, we will move into Measurement, measuring length with informal units.

In Religion, we have just finished learning about Pentecost and how we can use the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be good people in our words and actions. We are about to begin our unit on Grief and Loss. Information will be sent home to parents shortly.

Congratulations to our Award winners from last week! We are very proud of your efforts and the positive way you continue to contribute to our classroom community.
