Week 5 already!! The term is flying.
A few dates for the calendar..
Wednesday 27th May … Year 9 Market Day at Sacred Heart College
Thursday 28th May … Cross Country
Monday 1st - Wednesday 3rd June … Year 5 Camp to Ballarat
Year 9 Market Day Our Year 5s have been very lucky to be invited to attend the Year 9 Market Day at the College next Wednesday, 27th May. We will walk down around 12.30pm and the students will be able to purchase goodies and participate in activities at the various market stalls. Some of the things previously on offer have included: hot chips, cookies, baked goods, pancakes, sausage sizzle, beef and gravy rolls, slushies, raffles and lots more. Students are welcome to bring along some money to spend on the day. Card is ok but cash is preferred. We will be at the market until lunchtime, so it’ll be a great opportunity to buy a yummy lunch and support the Year 9s at the same time. Please get in touch if you have any questions, queries or concerns.
Home Reading- REMINDER Students in Year 5 are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.
Literacy
This week we have continue reading our class novel, Dirrarn. The books follow Mia, a young Aboriginal girl from the Kimberley region of Australia, and her experiences at boarding school far from home. We are using information we have read about the Kimberley to write a factual recount focussing on Jandamarra, an aboriginal tracker who fought to save his country and people from colonisation upon the arrival of the early settlers in the 1890s.
Maths
In Maths we have been learning about Decimals ~ focusing on place value to tenths and hundredths. All the Year 5s have set a personal goal, identifying an area of decimals they would like to work on.
Inquiry
Last week we wrapped up our Inquiry unit: Earth, Moon and the Sun. This week we begin looking at important events in Australian history, in particular the events that led up to the Gold Rush of the 1850s and the influx of gold seekers to Victoria. We are learning about gold mining, licences, the Eureka Stockade and the rebellion of the miners in preparation for our Sovereign Hill camp in week 7. In next week we will start working on our gold rubric, completing activities to earn karats for our end of term auction. This will happen in the last week of term, after camp.
