Dear Parents and Families,

It’s hard to believe we've reached the halfway mark of term. Term 2 continues to be filled with meaningful learning experiences, leadership opportunities, and a strong sense of community in Year 6.

Literacy

In Reading, we have finished reading Us Mob Walawurru, a compelling novel that offered a great insight into Indigenous culture and perspectives. The students were deeply engaged with the story and characters. In Writing, we’ve been focusing on factual recounts, with a special emphasis on the 1967 Referendum. This important moment in Australian history has sparked thoughtful discussion and curiosity among our students.

We are about to begin a new novel study; Free Diving by Lorrae Coffin. The students will explore the story’s historical context and its emotional impact. In Writing, the students will create personal responses reflecting deeply and critically about what they read, hear, and see, and express their own perspectives in thoughtful ways.

Year 6 Book Clubs – Weekly Reading & Discussion

Our Year 6 students are excited to be taking part in Book Clubs this term! Each student has been placed in a small group and given a shared novel to read together over several weeks.

Book Clubs take place every Thursday, where students meet with their group to discuss the chapters they’ve read, share ideas, ask questions, and explore the themes and characters in greater depth. These sessions help build confidence, comprehension, and a love of reading through collaborative learning.

To support their participation, students may bring their novel home during the week to catch up on reading and ensure they are prepared for Thursday’s discussion.

Numeracy

We have just completed our unit on Fractions – exploring equivalence, comparing and ordering fractions, and applying them to problem-solving situations. Students are working hard and showing great persistence with these important concepts. We are now starting a unit on 3D Objects, where we will explore the properties such as cross-sections that can be used to describe and classify them.

Religious Education

This term, our Year 6 students have been exploring the powerful message of the Resurrection and what it means for us today. Through Scripture, discussion, and creative activities, students have been learning that the Church is more than a building—it is a community of people called to live with love, hope, and faith.

Inquiry

The students are enjoying the ‘Sudden and Extreme Changes to Earth’s Surface' unit, where they will investigating major geological and extreme weather-related events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, drought, bushfires, floods and cyclones.

Leadership Positions Semester Two

For those students wishing to apply for Semester 2 School Captain, application forms need to be in by the end of this week.

Once applications are submitted, students, Year 6 teachers, leadership staff, and specialist teachers will all have the opportunity to vote. Students who receive the highest number of votes will then be invited to participate in an informal conversation with Mr Mullavey and Mrs Bridgeman.

Successful candidates will be announced at the Sacred Heart Day Mass (Friday 12th June).

Welcome

We are also very excited to have a student teacher, Miss Alex Ridley working in 6O. We know she will love working with the children in 6O.
