From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade 1 families!

It is hard to believe we are halfway through the term. This can be a tricky time as the children start to get tired, sicknesses can pop up, and the weather usually starts to turn. Please ensure you keep your children home if they are unwell.

Readers- Please remember to bring in home readers on a Friday. Children should be reading two books a week, focusing on accuracy and fluency. Each night, we aim to add more voice and expression using the punctuation to help.

📝Literacy-

In our Literacy lessons, we have continued to focus on various concepts and skills, such as revision of nouns, proper nouns, adjectives and conjunctions (joining words). We have reviewed our ‘ew’ and ‘ue’ digraphs, reading and writing words, sentences and stories containing these sounds.

In Writing, we have explored the parts of a narrative (beginning, middle and end) and also explored the parts of a recount (using first, then, next language). We also had lots of fun learning about alliteration and plurals!

⭐Graphs, Digraphs & Trigraphs we are learning:

ew/ue- /ew/ as in grew and /ue/ as in glue

/y/ as in cry- we know when we hear this sound at the end of a word, we use /y/

/igh/ as in light- we know this sound can be used in the middle and end of words

➕➖Maths-

We have continued to revise our learning about numbers and their place value by challenging ourselves to solve ‘number net’ problems. We need to use our place value knowledge of tens and ones to solve these! We need to use +1 or –1, +10 or –10 understanding to solve.

We have also explored length by using language such as shorter than, longer than to compare lengths of objects. We have also had fun ‘hefting’ objects (lifting and estimating the weight of objects) We know we can describe the mass of objects using the words ‘heavy, ‘heavier’, ‘light’, ‘lighter’, ‘about the same weight’, ‘less mass’, ‘more mass’ and ‘equal mass’

💙Religion – Pentecost-

Our Religion lessons have continued to focus on the story of Pentecost.

🌍 Inquiry- History-

Our Inquiry lessons have focused on things that have happened in our past. We have enjoyed listening to various stories that recount past events. We’ve discussed how our families and our communities celebrate special memories.
