Dear Grade Three Families,

Can you believe there’s only a few weeks left until the end of the term?! Our year three students have been working very hard this term, learning new skills and building on their prior knowledge.

📚 In Reading, we have moved away from Making Connections when reading and are now focusing on Monitoring and Questioning before, during and after reading. Monitoring is checking if a story makes sense, while questioning is asking curious questions about characters, events, and what might happen next. These are important comprehension strategies that together, help students reflect on and develop a deeper understanding of a text.

✍️ In Writing, students are continuing to explore different types of narratives including fairytales, fables, comics, fantasy, sci-fi and mystery. They have unpacked what makes a good narrative and have practised including these elements within their own narratives. They have also been practising using the writing process by planning, drafting, revising and editing their pieces so that they are interesting and make sense. We are so impressed by the creativity and imagination of our students!

🔢 In Numeracy, students have been immersed in interactive activities that look at various types of angles including right, acute, obtuse, straight, reflex and revolution angles. We are now moving into our new unit on fractions where students will be learning about halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and tenths and how we can represent these as equal parts.

🔍 In Inquiry, students have been working hard to research a celebration or commemoration as part of our overarching question,‘Why do we commemorate events of the past?’. They have been using their ICT skills to create a Slides presentation on their chosen event, which they will be presenting to their peers in the final weeks of term.

Homework reminders:

Our current set of homework is due on Thursday June 25th in Week 10. All tasks highlighted in yellow are essential and must be completed. All other tasks are optional but recommended. There is an expectation that each student reads for 30 minutes each night and that it is logged in their Reading Logs. Please remind your child to bring their book satchel in every Friday for their Reading Logs to be signed by their teacher, and to swap their books for the next week.
