Through storytelling and short performances, students explored the arrival of the First Fleet and considered this moment from both British and Indigenous perspectives.

Students learned about Captain Arthur Phillip and heard the story of his first meeting with the Eora warriors, where shared cultural symbols helped build mutual respect. They also enjoyed learning about early misunderstandings during first contact and how Aboriginal people interpreted the appearance of the newcomers.

Following the performance, students participated in three hands‑on activities to deepen their understanding. They played Naka Naka, a traditional Aboriginal strategy game using decorated stones; created meaningful Love Tokens inspired by those made by convicts for loved ones; and ground their own spice mixes, learning about the spice routes travelled by convict ships — an activity that sparked plenty of discussion due to its strong aroma!

Text Study – Ancient Greece

Alongside their History learning, Year 4 students are continuing their text studies on Ancient Greece. In this unit, students are focusing on the features of information texts and how they are organised to help readers learn and understand information. Students are identifying features such as headings, subheadings, diagrams, captions, glossaries, and layout choices to support comprehension.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students are developing their understanding of factors and multiplication, with a focus on the 2, 4, and 8 times tables. They are exploring patterns within times tables, making connections between them, and using a range of strategies to support fluency and reasoning. This approach is helping students build confidence and deepen their understanding of how numbers work.

Year 4 students have made an enthusiastic start to the term and are excited to continue developing their learning across all areas.
