In the final week of Term 1, the Prep students enjoyed a special Easter craft session with their Year 5 buddies. It was wonderful to see the students come together to decorate and create bunny ears and Easter baskets, with plenty of creativity and excitement on display.

Having their older buddies there to support them made the experience even more enjoyable and helped build confidence in our Prep students. The Year 5s did a fantastic job guiding and encouraging the younger students, especially when helping with some of the trickier parts of the activities.

Unit of Inquiry

Transdisciplinary Theme: How we express ourselves

Central Idea: Senses help people express their ideas

Lines of Inquiry

  • The five senses

  • The way we use our senses to help us function

  • The different ways in which we use our senses

  •

At school this term, we have begun an exciting new Unit of Inquiry. The Prep students are exploring the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell) and how these senses help us to understand and interact with the world around us.

This week, we focused on our central idea: “Senses help people express their ideas.” Students were introduced to each of the five senses and discussed how they use them in their everyday lives. We talked about how our eyes help us see colours, shapes and movement, our ears allow us to hear sounds and music, our sense of touch helps us feel different textures and temperatures, our sense of taste lets us enjoy different flavours, and our sense of smell helps us identify different scents.

The students enjoyed sharing their own experiences and making connections to how they use their senses both at school and at home.

We have many exciting activities coming up to support this learning, including a “Five Senses” walk around the school, where students will use observation skills to explore their environment, and some fun, hands-on experiments in the Science room with Mrs Jones.
