Traditional Aboriginal Games and Dance
Learning about Aboriginal culture through games and dance
During the last 2 weeks the year 7 and 8’s at Northcote have had incursions from an Indigenous organisation called Wanyara. The incursions involved a dance session for the year 7s and a play session for the year 8s. The dance sessions consisted of traditional movement and expression. Dance sessions use traditional instruments, connecting students to the dance, customs and belief systems. They are included to help create some diversity in the rhythm and movement unit that our year 7 cohort undertake in term 4.
The Play sessions consist of TAG (Traditional Aboriginal Games), created by our First Nations ancestors to build interpersonal and communication skills, develop physical agility and grow stronger mentally, physically and socially. TAG sessions are designed to be fun and physical, using language, history and tradition to teach powerful life lessons. Throughout both incursions we saw large participation with students getting involved and learning about Indigenous culture through games and dance.
