Level 1

It has been an exciting fortnight in Level 1! Alongside all our amazing learning, we have been challenging ourselves to make new connections and build friendships as we prepare for Level 2. We are so proud of the way our students have embraced these opportunities!
Literacy
Over the past few weeks, we have revisited fiction and narrative writing. We used ‘Dust Buddies’ as our mentor text to spark our imaginations and inspire some creative storytelling! We brainstormed everyday items that might seem a little boring, such as paper clips, dust bunnies, paper and crayons, and imagined how they could become characters in exciting stories with problems to solve. We then selected fitting settings and let our imaginations run wild! Our stories are filled with interesting vocabulary, imaginative problems and creative solutions for our characters. It has been so much fun bringing these ideas to life!
Numeracy
In Maths, we have been building on our knowledge of place value as we partition, build, expand and rename numbers through our ‘Place Value Zoo’ activity. We had a wonderful time designing our own made-up animals and calculating their values using different combinations of hundreds, tens and ones. Some of our creations were worth some very impressive numbers! One animal was worth 1,751, which could be represented as 17 hundreds, 33 tens and 21 ones. We have loved getting creative while exploring how numbers can be represented in different ways!
Inquiry
We have continued exploring our ‘Safety’ unit. This week, we investigated how advertising messages can influence our food and drink choices and explored the impact that certain foods and drinks can have on our teeth. We have set up an experiment to investigate what happens when teeth are exposed to different liquids over time. Using eggshells as a model for tooth enamel, we are comparing the effects of water, soft drink, juice and vinegar. We will observe the eggs over the coming week to see what changes occur and discuss the importance of looking after our teeth.
Grandparents’ and Special Person Day
A huge thank you to all the wonderful grandparents and special people who were able to visit our classrooms this week! We understand that not every student was able to have their special person attend, and we are incredibly grateful to the families who welcomed other students into their groups so everyone could participate in the activities. Your kindness and generosity helped make the day a special one for everyone. We feel very lucky to be part of such a caring and supportive Level 1 community!
