We're a great mix in Level 6!
Last week, our Level 6 students explored the current HEPS values and shared their thoughts on other values they believe are important and reflect HEPS.
As part of our ongoing evaluation of our school values, we are considering whether any changes may be needed. It is important that we hear a range of perspectives, including those of our students, staff, parents/carers and the wider HEPS community.
Below are two word clouds created by our Level 6 students, showcasing their ideas and the values they believe are important to our school community.

In Reading, we are continuing our whole-class novel study of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. As we explore William’s inspiring story, we have been developing our skills in using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary and identifying cause-and-effect relationships in real-life situations.
We have also been broadening our understanding of the world beyond the novel by learning about Malawi, where William grew up, and exploring food choices and eating patterns across different countries and cultures.
In Writing, we have been having a great time creating our scrapbooks! So far, we have explored poetry, recounts and narratives, and have recently begun writing information reports. Each week, we carefully consider the purpose and features of the genre we are focusing on and work on developing our writing skills.
Our grammar lessons are closely connected to our writing, helping us understand how to make our work more engaging, detailed and effective. Once we have completed our drafts, we explore different grammar techniques and look for opportunities to incorporate them as we revise and improve our writing. These include using interjections to add expression, combining sentences using our knowledge of clauses and conjunctions, experimenting with punctuation such as commas and semicolons, and adding appositives to provide extra information.
Revising our writing has been a big focus this year, and we are learning that great writing doesn't happen in just one draft! We are becoming more confident at making thoughtful choices about our words, sentences and punctuation to help us communicate our ideas clearly and creatively.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the volume of prisms and investigating the relationship between volume, capacity and mass. We have also been learning how these measurements are connected when working with pure water.
We are now beginning our probability unit, where we will investigate chance through repeated experiments and simulations. We will explore how to represent and compare probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages, making predictions, testing our ideas and comparing our expected outcomes with what actually happens.
