Sustainability🌱
Spring Has Sprung!
Spring is hereeeee! And our Sustainability team has been busy getting outside, spotting wildlife and getting our gardens ready for the warmer weather.
The Aussie Bird Count 🦆🐧
Over the last two weeks, we’ve spent lots of time outdoors participating in the Aussie Bird Count! As a school, we counted over 500 birds! Some of the species spotted included Noisy Miners, King Parrots, Rainbow Lorikeets, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos and Little Ravens. It’s been wonderful seeing our students slow down, observe the world around them and appreciate the wildlife sharing our school grounds.
🌱 Spring Planting Is Underway!
Every class has had the opportunity to get outside and plant some of our spring produce. Students have been learning all about choosing the right spot near a water source, using stakes to support growing plants and giving their seedlings a little helping hand with seaweed concentrate to help them settle into their new home.
Keep your eyes peeled for our Kitchen Garden signboard to see what’s growing! We can’t wait to watch our produce grow over the coming weeks.
♻️ Compost Is Ready… Come and Get It!
We finally have a compost bin full of beautiful, ready-to-use compost for our gardens! Our compost bin has been processing all our food scraps into something valuable instead of sending them to landfill.
Our spring garden beds are already well stocked, so we have plenty of extra compost to share with our school community. Families are welcome to collect some for their gardens at home!
Compost is fantastic for enriching existing garden beds. Simply sprinkle it over your garden, gently rake it through to mix it with the soil, and then plant away!
How to collect yours: Bring along your own buckets, wheelbarrows, containers or anything suitable for carrying compost, and take some home for your garden.

💡 Sustainability Tip of the Fortnight: Keep Your Cool!
It's been HOT lately! 🥵 And if you've looked at your electricity bill and thought, "Oh nooooo!", this one's for you.
When using your air conditioner, try setting it to a comfortable temperature around 20–24°C, rather than cranking it down to 15–19°C. Setting the temperature much lower doesn't cool your home faster, it can make your air conditioner run for longer than necessary, using more electricity and potentially increasing your bill. Using less electricity also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy production, making it a simple way to save money while reducing your environmental footprint.
A few extra ways to keep cool sustainably:
Open windows early in the morning when the outside air is cooler, then close them before the day heats up.
Close blinds or curtains to keep the sunshine and heat out.
Use fans where appropriate to help you feel cooler.
Your wallet will thank you, and so will the planet! 🌏
Happy spring gardening, everyone! 🌼
