Year 1

Term Two - Week 10

Well, we are almost at the halfway mark of 2026. We are so proud of how well the Year One classes are doing with their routines, as part of our Classroom Mastery and behaviour curriculum. Our spaces are calm allowing for a greater depth of learning. We look forward to discussing your child's progress at Parent Teacher Interviews, early in Term Three. 

Jeremy's News

We love hearing about our students being successful in their extra-curricular activities. Jeremy participated in the Northern Star Interschool Zonal Chess tournament. He won 3rd place in the Primary School- Prep-Grade 2 section. He also won 2nd place in the Junior Primary section. Well done Jeremy!

Literacy

We have been busy writing super sentences and understanding what make a sentence great. InitiaLit lessons taught reading and spelling of words with r-controlled vowels, such as ar, or/ore, ir/ur/er, and two syllable words ending in /er/ (teacher). We explored adding the suffix 's' to words to make them plurals and also the use of base words and suffixes for verb agreement, 'ing' and 'er'. InitialWrite took us on an alliteration adventure, whilst exploring a narrative about some park rangers who cared for a native numbat named Neela. 

Our tricky word tree was a bit lighter on than Term One, but we can all spell the word because, because we learned to sing it in a song! Ask your little person to sing it with you! We learnt to add more information to the sentence using the icon cards and make sure that our sentences make sense. We begin our day with the daily sentence for around 10 minutes.

Exploring the world through storybooks

Our story books in the past few weeks have introduced us to some interesting vocabulary. devoured, scrumptious, ingenious. 

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch by Ronda Armitage is a humorous and entertaining story about Mr Grinling, a lighthouse keeper who lives on a rocky island. Every day, his wife carefully prepares and sends his delicious lunch across the water. However, some mischievous seagulls keep stealing his food before it reaches him. Mr and Mrs Grinling must work together to solve the problem and ensure that his lunch arrives safely. This enjoyable story explores problem-solving, teamwork, and perseverance, while providing plenty of laughs along the way.

Bears Don't Read by Emma Chichester Clark is a delightful story about a bear named George who discovers a love of books and reading. When George finds a lost book in the park, he becomes curious and begins his journey to learn how to read. Along the way, he meets a kind girl named Clementine, who helps him unlock the wonderful world of stories. This heartwarming book celebrates friendship, perseverance, and the joy that reading can bring. It encourages children to value books and reminds us that it is never too late to learn something new.

Mathematics 

We have rounded out the term by learning about addition and subtraction number sentences and fact families, as well as measurement and duration of time. The students used the language of 'first' and 'later' to organise their day. We began looking at the days of the week and a monthly calendar to discuss when events may occur in our week.

Grade One presented Assembly Prayer

Well done to the readers of our assembly prayer and to the students who have stepped out of their comfort zones to speak in front of assembly or Church this semester. It can be a very daunting experience for our younger people, but the excitement when they get a reading is priceless. Well done to all our superstar readers!

Wet Weather Play

There have been some rainy days recently but that hasn't stopped the students having fun drawing, playing games and talking with their friends during break times.

With the weather changes please remind your child to pack a jumper and a spare pair of socks in their bag each day (there is nothing worse than wet and cold toes after playing outside). 

Inquiry

We have been learning about how to care for our place. We explored the idea of reusing, reducing and recycling. We could teach you about what goes in each bin at our school or house! Mrs Timperley's class shared their learning with the Grade 4 class.

St Vincent dePaul Food Drive

We are seeking donations of shelf stable food, toiletries and hygiene products for our St Vincent de Paul food drive. The baskets for collection are in the office area. All donations are appreciated and go to families and people in our region who are experiencing hardship.
