Times Tables Blitz

We have started a Times Tables Blitz and this will continue into next term. By the end of next term, we aim that every student knows their times tables automatically. It's ambitious, but the students have already started improving. Instead of spelling, the students have the option of writing out their times tables. When they write them out, they need to write the whole sum, from start to finish. This is how they are going to learn the sum. Then they can say it out loud. If you have time, please test them. There is a tendency to write down the page, but this doesn't improve their knowledge. We started this week with the 2 and 3 times tables. We are moving to 5 and 10. I know these are the easy ones, but the students don't currently know them automatically. 

Literacy

The Year 5's have finished their study of 'Waves'. The book was about the experiences of people who had travelled to Australia by boat. Every journey is perilous, every situation heartbreaking. Every refugee is a person forced by famine or war or fear to leave their home, their families, their friends and all they know. Children have travelled on the waves of migration to the shores of Australia for tens of thousands of years. This book tells some of their stories. Our students then write their own fictional story of a person on a boat. There were lots of different stories and although writing can be hard, the students really showed persistence. In the final two weeks of term we have been looking at poetry. 

Mathematics

There have been a range of Mathematics topics we have covered recently. We have completed a unit on Shape more recently and now we are looking at time. The students are aiming to be able to learn how to read an analog clock. Some students are excellent and others are still gaining the skills. It would be great if you could test out your child. 

RE

We have been focusing on Reconciliation in our RE sessions. We enjoyed using artworks, such as Rembrandt's 'The Parable of the Prodigal Son.' (Luke 15:11-40)

We discussed how the artist has used light and other features to portray the story of this very well-known parable told by Jesus. Jesus often taught about reconciliation, forgiveness, and restoration through parables—stories drawn from everyday life that reveal deeper truths about how people are called to live.

Cooking Challenge 

Students in Year 5 had fun in their recent cooking challenge. We had lots of home cooking photos sent in, which was really fun to show the students. They were able to gain points when they cooked at home, but also when they worked hard, did their reading and spelling and when they were organised. We were able to gain nearly 600 points - when our aim was 500 - we smashed it!! Our reward was making pizza and hedgehog. Take a look...
