Year 6

Welcome to our Grade 6 Classroom Communication for Term 2, Week 10!

Year 6 News by Lily and April

English

Our class is reading the book Free Diving, a short story about an aboriginal child taken away from his family and forced to dive deep depths for pearls. We have been writing a book report on Free diving and further looking at the background of the story. Our spelling focuses are the base words log-logy, vert, flect, ject and auto we have done many learning activities around these. We have also begun fluency passages, reading them to our table partners to improve speed and constant flow.  

Maths

In Maths we have being learning about decimals and fractions. We have also been learning about adding and subtracting decimals. We have also introduced times tables sheets which we have 5 minutes to complete. There are 120 multiplication problems that we put our best efforts into solving. We hope to improve our speed and accuracy each day!

Science

In Science we are investigating mould growth. We are looking at where, how and why mould grows on bread. In small groups we have placed slices of bread into different conditions- moisture, light and temperature, to see where mould grows best and the effects.

Religious Education

In RE the topic we are learning about is reconciliation which includes writing a story about reconciliation and forgiveness which we are going to share with the grade 3 students once finished. We watched a short video by Douglas Talks about reconciliation which inspired us students to have a go ourselves.

Good Start Visits

This week Mr Kerlin took 10 Grade 6 students to Goodstart Early Learning Euroa. We read stories to some children and did some activities with them and we all had a great time with them.  We are really looking forward to our next visit! We will also visit Euroa Kindergarten.

Specialist Timetable 

PE and Art are on a Tuesday this term, and Japanese and STEM are on a Wednesday.

Cross Country Running

A few weeks ago some students had qualified to run at the Division level running at the Yea racecourse. The track was quite hilly and wet and slippery which was challenging. It was a very chilly day but everyone had a great time. From the year 6 class Paige was lucky enough to make it through to the Region level at Benalla. The competition was super strong but Paige tried her very best and represented us in style.

Netball and Football Day - Benalla

Joining with the year 5 students we jumped on the bus and travelled to Benalla, to compete with St. Mary's Mansfield and St. Joseph's Benalla in football and netball.

We entered two netball teams and one football team. Everyone was tried in different positions and learnt lots. Overall the netball teams had some success with winning some games while on the footy field we unfortunately didn't win any games against some slick outfits. The day was well organised and officiated by FCJ students and topped off by a sausage sizzle for all. A great day was had by all!

Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)

In RRRR we have been learning about forgiving others and learning how to apologise properly when we have done the wrong thing. We acted some situations out where we could practice ways of saying sorry in some different situations.

Let's Find Our Voice

After weeks of practicing and rehearsing it was show time! We were all very excited to attend the midday concert at FCJ Benalla. At the concert students performed two songs as part of this exciting event which involved members of the Benalla community, St. Josephs, FCJ and of course St. John's. The students were fantastic and enjoyed their experience. We were wowed at the high level of musicians and choir. What a fantastic opportunity we were given to join in and contribute to this event. 

Harry Noah Tunks

Welcome Harry Noah Tunks you have already won hearts without even saying a word. We are excited to share that our school family has grown by one tiny member! A brand-new baby has joined the world on the 2nd of June bringing joy to the classroom. While we don't have all the details yet, we know this little one is already surrounded by love, and we can't wait to welcome him into our St John's community. Congratulations to the proud family and welcome Little One!
