A big thanks to all our Year 4 students and families for another great term. It's hard to believe we are halfway through the year.
Reports and Parent Interviews
Reports will be released on Thursday after 3pm through PAM or Simon Everywhere App. Parent teacher interviews to discuss your child's progress and report will be happening in the second week of Term 3. Bookings are done through PAM/Simon, this will be open shortly, please keep an eye out.
Readers
Keep up the great work of reading at home. It can be tricky to keep up the enthusiasm for reading closer to holidays. Students are tired from a long day of school and are in desperate need of a holiday. A big well done to those who continue to battle on through the fatigue.
English
Reading - Narratives and Poetry
A fortnight ago, we completed our second text "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan as part of our unit on narratives. The arrival is a wordless graphic novel portraying a migrant’s journey to a strange new land, exploring displacement, hope, belonging, family, and the challenges of adapting to an unfamiliar culture. We had such an enjoyable time interpreting the vignettes to create meaning. Throughout this process we looked at vocabulary words to describe the feelings we felt reading it;
We've just completed our fist text "The Eagle" by Alfred Lord Tennyson as part of our unit on Poetry. We've come to appreciate the devices poets use to create emotion in their work. A device we've enjoyed looking at use the use of similes and rhyme that make poems a little more whimsical.
Writing - In keeping with our new unit of poetry we've been exploring how we can use similes in our work to describe characters in poems, here are a few examples;
"As poisonous as my sister's breath." - Roy
"As loud as a megaphone." - Darcy
"As rough as sandpaper." - Lucy
"As frilly as a dilophosaurus." - Jimmy
"As loud as a beat-box." - Indie
This groundwork combined with the work we are doing on rhyming couplets will work nicely to create sonnets. Be on the lookout for those coming shortly.
Spelling - We continue to work our way through Spellex. Over the past few weeks we've learnt about open and closed syllables to help with our spelling choices.
We learnt a new catchy song for 'beautiful' one of our focused tricky words.
We discovered 'White Tiger' words are words that a rare like a white tiger. These words contain the quad graph 'ough'. To remember this we think 'out you go Henry.'
Lastly we've investigated 'rabbit' words. These words have double consonants in the middle, eg. kitten.
Mathematics
Throughout mathematics we've investigated and classified 2D shapes by their properties, including sides, angles and symmetry. They compared shapes, solved geometric problems, and applied their understanding through hands-on activities and real-world examples. To finish the unit we create some mandalas to reflect what we learnt about symmetry.
We have also worked on building confidence with addition and subtraction by learning formal written methods that involve regrouping. They use their understanding of place value to exchange ones, tens and hundreds when needed, helping them solve larger calculations accurately. Through games, practical activities and real-world problems, students develop efficient strategies, explain their thinking, and gain confidence in applying these skills in everyday situations.
Camp
A huge congratulations for all our campers this year. I've been on lots of camps, however this was my first camp where students were relaxed, calm and asleep by 10pm.
Our campers were reliable, intendent and willing to give everything a go, whether it be doing something brave like the big swing or eating something a bit different. A big thanks to families for their preparation in making sure our campers were set up for success.
