Year 2

Term 2
As we reach the end of Term 2, it is wonderful to reflect on the positive progress and achievements of our class throughout the semester. Students have consistently demonstrated enthusiasm, focus, and a strong commitment to their learning, embracing the many opportunities and experiences that have been offered. It has been particularly pleasing to see students actively living out our focus on The Common Good—doing what is best for everyone, not just themselves. They have shown kindness, respect, and consideration for others, contributing to a positive and supportive classroom environment.
Our classroom has truly become a space where students feel safe, valued, and heard. We are proud of the way they have worked together, supported one another, and contributed to our learning community. Their efforts and positive attitudes throughout the term have been commendable, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth in the second half of the year.
A Good Friend...
InitiaLit
During Term 2, students are continuing to develop their understanding and implementing the use of the code of reading through the InitialLit program. There is a strong focus on strengthening letter–sound relationships, recognising and applying phonemes and graphemes, and using this knowledge to read and write multi-syllable words with increasing confidence. Students are participating in more targeted teaching opportunities tailored to their point of need, allowing them to build accuracy and fluency when decoding and encoding words. They are working hard to apply their growing knowledge of sounds, tricky words and spelling patterns during reading and writing tasks. It's been great to see so many students having success.
Writing
Throughout Term 2, students have continued to develop their understanding of a range of writing genres, with a particular focus on information reports and procedural texts. They have strengthened their ability to organise ideas using appropriate text structures, including titles, headings, factual information, materials, and sequenced steps.
Students have worked diligently to write complete sentences, apply correct punctuation, and incorporate topic-specific vocabulary to communicate their ideas clearly and effectively. Through modelled, shared, guided, and independent writing experiences, they have built confidence in planning, drafting, editing, and publishing informative texts for a variety of purposes and audiences.
It has been pleasing to see the growth students have made in their writing skills, as they become more independent and purposeful communicators.
Numeracy
Throughout Term 2, students have continued to strengthen their understanding of place value and have applied this knowledge with increasing confidence when solving addition and subtraction problems. They have explored and practised a range of strategies to support their mathematical thinking, including partitioning numbers, using number lines, doubles and near doubles, and applying efficient mental computation strategies.
Students have also developed their skills in using column addition to solve two- and three-digit addition problems, demonstrating growing accuracy and an understanding of place value when regrouping. It has been pleasing to see students increasingly explain and justify their mathematical thinking using appropriate mathematical language and reasoning.
Throughout the term, students continued to investigate the measurement concepts of mass, volume, and capacity through a variety of hands-on learning experiences. They compared, estimated, and measured using both informal and formal units, while developing an understanding of the practical applications of measurement in everyday life. Students demonstrated enthusiasm and curiosity throughout these activities and have made positive progress in their mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills.
Year 2 have been enjoying our warm-up games from Love Maths. You may like to watch the clip and challenge your child to a game of “1, 2, 3, 4 – Win Them All.”
Religion
Throughout Term 2, students participated in the Grief and Loss unit, where they explored the concepts of change, loss, and renewal within creation, including the seasons and the life cycles of people, plants, and animals. Through meaningful discussions, reflective activities, and age-appropriate learning experiences, students developed a deeper understanding of the emotions associated with loss and change.
Students also explored the various ways families, cultural groups, and the Church remember, honour, and celebrate the lives of those who have died. It has been pleasing to see students engage thoughtfully and respectfully with these sensitive topics, demonstrating empathy, compassion, and an increasing awareness of the experiences and perspectives of others.
Inquiry
By the end of Term 2, students in the Year 2 Local and Global Connections unit have explored the connections between people and places within Australia and beyond. They have identified where they live on a map of Australia and investigated the features of their local area, developing an understanding of how they connect with people and places in their community. Students have examined how different regions, states, and territories are linked by tracing the journey of food from farms to supermarkets, recognising the importance of connections beyond their neighbourhood. They have also explored how changes in communication and transport technologies have influenced the way people and places are connected, both locally and globally.
PE
Throughout Term 2, students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in Physical Education lessons, embracing opportunities to be active while developing a range of fundamental movement and physical skills. They have approached each activity with enthusiasm, energy, and a willingness to challenge themselves, consistently demonstrating a positive attitude towards participation and learning. It has been particularly pleasing to observe students displaying excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, resilience, and respect for others during PE sessions. They have supported and encouraged their peers, worked collaboratively in group activities, and shown persistence when learning new skills. Their positive engagement and commitment have contributed to an inclusive and enjoyable learning environment for all.
RRRR - Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships.
The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program supports students in developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to build positive relationships, manage emotions, and promote wellbeing. Through age-appropriate learning experiences, students explore topics such as emotional literacy, personal strengths, resilience, respect, diversity, inclusion, and positive relationships. The program encourages students to develop empathy, confidence, and effective communication skills while fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment.
As part of our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) program, our Year 6 students visited the class to facilitate a lesson focused on cooperation, turn-taking, and building positive relationships. Students participated in a range of engaging activities, including Heads Down, Thumbs Up, which provided opportunities to practise these important social skills in a fun and supportive environment.
The Year 6 students did an outstanding job leading the session and demonstrated excellent leadership, positive attitudes, and respectful behaviour. They were wonderful role models, promoting wellbeing and showing how positive relationships can be built through kindness, cooperation, and inclusivity. We greatly enjoyed learning alongside them and look forward to our next session together.

We will keep supporting students to grow academically, socially and emotionally, while continuing to nurture their confidence and love of learning.
Thank you for your ongoing support throughout Term 2. Your partnership plays a vital role in your child’s success, and we truly appreciate your communication and involvement.

ONGOING REMINDERS
No Hat, No Play
St John’s is a “No Hat, No Play” school, which means all students are required to wear their hats every day. Please keep this in mind when doing hairstyles in the morning—high ponytails and buns can sometimes make it difficult for hats to sit properly.
Label Everything
Please ensure all items are clearly labelled. You’ll hear this reminder often throughout the year! While we may all grow tired of saying it, labelled belongings can be quickly returned if misplaced.
Friday Treats
Zooper Doopers are available for $1, and Cake Raffle tickets are 50c. Both take place every Friday.
Lunch Orders
Lunch orders are available every Wednesday.
Library
Library visits are on Fridays. Please remember that borrowed books must be returned before a new book can be issued.
Birthday Invitations
We are happy to distribute invitations at school if the entire class is invited. However, if only some children are being invited (which we completely understand), we kindly ask that invitations be shared privately. While disappointments are a part of life, missing out on a party can feel especially significant at 7 or 8 years old, and we would prefer school not be the setting for that upset.
