Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

This week, Year 2 students continued to work hard across their learning as we moved closer to the end of Term 2. In Religious Education, students continued learning about St Thomas the Apostle and reflected on how asking questions can help us grow in faith and understanding. In English, students explored informative texts and factual recounts through their learning about space exploration and the Curiosity Mars Rover. They discussed how diagrams, illustrations and text features help readers understand information. In Mathematics, students continued their work in measurement, focusing on capacity and using informal units to compare and order containers. Students also revised their learning about Australia in Integrated Curriculum and continued developing their Auslan communication skills through signs, gestures, eye contact and visual communication.

English:

Students will continue exploring informative texts through their learning about space exploration and the Curiosity Mars Rover. They will discuss key ideas from texts, compare how diagrams and illustrations support understanding, and explain their opinions using evidence. Students will also plan, draft, edit and publish a factual recount using time connectives, topic words and clear informative language. Students will also revisit suffixes such as -er, -est, -y and -ly, practise the ‘y to i’ spelling rule, and continue building fluency through paired reading.

Mathematics:

Students will continue learning about capacity. They will measure, compare and order the capacity of containers using informal units. Students will use hands-on materials and mathematical language to explain which containers hold more, hold less or hold about the same amount.

What you can do at home

  • Read together each night and discuss whether the text is written to entertain, inform or persuade. Ask your child to explain how they know. We encourage you to read informatin texts to build world knowledge and vocabulary.

  • Practise maths in everyday life by comparing containers such as cups, bowls or bottles. Ask your child which container holds more, holds less or holds about the same amount.

  • Talk and share signs together by asking your child to teach you an Auslan sign or facial expression they have learned at school. Practising together helps build confidence and communication skills.

Important Reminders

  • Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.

  • Please remind your child to change their reading books when they need to.

Enjoy your weekend,
