Our Poets
Prestigious Program for High Achieving Secondary School Students
In 7SEAL English we are doing a unit on poetry, with a focus on figurative language.
As part of our exploration of metaphors, I asked students to identify four of their personality traitsand write a four line ‘I am…’ poem using a metaphor to describe their personality trait. I then asked students to choose their favourite line, with help from their classmates, and I combined them into a class poem.
You can read it below.
Can you guess the personality trait?
Xavier Sellenger of 7S has also allowed me to share a poem he wrote in his own time. He loves writing poetry and has a clear talent for imagery and words.

7S ‘I am…’ poem
I am the Wikipedia you use for your homework
I am the Kamala Harris in the 2024 political debate
I am the pawns on a chessboard
I am the beer opener that alcoholics use every day
I am the cat chasing a red dot
I am the warm ray of sunshine on a summer morning
I am the annoying branch scraping on your windowI am the T's & C's at the end of an advertisement
I am the marks you get on your maths cat
I am like a drumstick missing the beat but still making music anyway
I am the soft rain dripping in a Zen garden
I am the hand that is raised when you have an answer
I am a charger in a battery emergency
I am the presents you receive on your birthday
I am a spinning wheel full of different options, unsure when to slow down and stop
I am the blowhorn that obliterates your ears
I am a small pebble next to a big mountain
I am the small child locked in time out
I am the wobbly fan that's spinning faster than the others
I am a luke warm toasty without any meat
I am the short battery life of an old weak power bank
I am the eye in a storm
A poem from Xavier Sellenger
as it sheds its fur on the tundra floor,
a fawn scampered along on its way.
life is a dance - la vie est une danse,
a chasse, a sway, as I walk down my way.
A Mellifluous, sound so sweet...
Just remember to stumble - make an improvised rumble,
For that is all life is.
"Don’t try to stay afloat," said the little fawn.
la vie est une danse, danse.
She jumped over moss
splashed and danced in the pond
These antlers grew up above -
Enjoy every hue:
Riverdance, or buck moon...
la vie est une danse, danse.
Running your claws along blades of grass, permafrost sporadic in bouts so fast – this is life, so cold in warmth. La vie est une danse, danse.
Life is a dance - yes you tumble and fall.
You fall like an opossum in impiety.
Just stay caught in the trance, have a ball, go to France!
La vie est une danse, danse.
