International Week and Brighton’s Got Talent
Across the past week we celebrated International Week in our school community. Staff and students ran a range of events including learning mahjong, international cooking, mapping our school communities heritage, a surprise international game, guess the country, international arts, craft and activities, red light green light game, international karaoke, k-pop dancing and our whole school assembly which included two of our International Students sharing their compelling experiences of integrating into Brighton SC and Australia, as well as a Chinese dragon performance.
The map below highlights the birth countries of the parents of our students. The deeper red the country, the greater the number of the parents that were born in that country. There are at least 50 different countries of origin for the parents of our students with all continents (other than Antarctica) having representation, further, there are more than 20 different languages being spoken in the homes of our students.
This dataset highlights some of the cultural and linguistic diversity within our school community, both of which provide wonderful learning opportunities for our students through the relationships that they form with their classmates. It also reinforces why a celebration like International Week matters within our community.
On another note, we were treated to a jam-packed celebration of student talents at our Brighton’s Got Talent event on the 5th of August. We saw two full acts of performances, including dance, taekwondo, a Shakespearean monologue, and numerous musical performances ranging from vocal duets and solos, bands, violins, pianos, guitars and drums, an original song, and one triple-threat, mixing the piano, harmonica and vocals.
Keep an eye on our social media to see some of these performances in the coming weeks.
The energy in the crowd was electric! Hands clapping and feet stomping along with the beats and cheering in the moments of anticipation during the performances to show encouragement and appreciation for each of our talented students.
The event was student led from concept to concert with our staff providing a small amount of guidance and support, so whilst we celebrate the talents of the performers, it would be remiss not to celebrate the talents of the mc and organisation team. Thank you for your hard work and dedication in pulling together a wonderful event!
