Writing

As writers, the students have begun planning and drafting historical narratives based on topics from our Inquiry unit, including The First Fleet, the Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade. A major focus has been on developing engaging introductions and using descriptive language to capture the reader’s attention from the very first sentence.

Maths

As mathematicians, we have begun our new unit on Probability. Students are learning to describe the likelihood of events using terms such as certain, likely, unlikely and impossible. They are also exploring the difference between theoretical probability (what should happen) and experimental probability (what actually happens). Through hands-on activities involving dice, coins and spinners, students are recording results, making predictions and comparing outcomes to develop their understanding of chance in everyday life.

The photographs are of a game we played called, Remove. The purpose of this game is for students to develop an understanding that not all outcomes are equally likely. By repeatedly rolling two six-sided dice and observing which totals appear most often, students discover that some numbers have a greater chance of occurring than others.

Inquiry

As part of our Inquiry unit, students explored the concept of democracy through the events of the Eureka Stockade. They investigated why the miners protested, the rights they were fighting for, and how the Eureka Stockade helped shape democratic principles in Australia.

Students have also begun their Inquiry Project. Each student has selected a significant event from Australia’s past and developed their own inquiry question to guide their research. Through this project, students will investigate how historical events have shaped Australia today and consider what these events might mean for our future.
