Year 3 News

Welcome to Week 8. Hope everyone has had a fun-filled and restful long weekend.
As writers, we are learning about the features and structure of a factual recount. While it shares similarities with a personal recount, a factual recount retells real events and includes accurate information about a person, place or historical event. To build our understanding, we have read the picture book Stolen Girl and viewed BTN videos about the Stolen Generation, gathering important facts and ideas through note-taking. Using our research, we will write a factual recount from the perspective of an Aboriginal child or parent affected by the Stolen Generation.
Our factual recounts will include: an introduction that explains who was involved, what happened, where and when the events took place, and why they occurred, body paragraphs that retell the events in chronological order, a conclusion that reflects on the thoughts and feelings of the person affected by the events, past tense vocabulary such as taken, separated, grieved, worried, and confused, time connectives such as many years ago, during this time, after that, then, later on, and eventually to sequence events clearly. We look forward to sharing our writing down the track.
As mathematicians, we have concluded our unit on data. We developed our skills in collecting and organising data by entering raw data into a spreadsheet and creating frequency tables. We also compared the features of graphs, lists and tables using Venn diagrams, identifying their similarities and differences while considering which representation would be most suitable for a particular audience and purpose.
This week we will revisit Addition and Subtraction and practise solving addition and subtraction problems involving 2 and 3 digit numbers. We will use a range of strategies including concrete materials and number lines, to model and solve mathematical problems with accuracy and confidence.
Religion
As a Catholic faith community, we have been learning about the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and its significance as the Body and Blood of Christ. Through the Scripture story of the Last Supper, we explored the first Eucharist and deepened our understanding of Jesus’ gift of himself to his followers. We learned that when we receive the Body of Christ, we remember Jesus’ love and sacrifice and are called to keep him close in our hearts each day. We also explored the important symbols of the Eucharist, including the bread, wine, chalice and host, and discussed how they help us understand and celebrate this sacred sacrament.
Inquiry
As researchers, we have been investigating significant Australians who played important roles in shaping our nation's history. Some of the historical figures we have explored include Ned Kelly, Sir Henry Parkes, Captain Arthur Phillip and Mary Bryant. Using our research notes, we are developing our skills as writers by creating factual recounts that describe their lives, achievements, challenges and contributions to Australian history.
TRP
During TRP time we have learnt that empathy is an important social skill that we use in managing and strengthening our friendships. We identified empathetic behaviours (or building blocks) that help to strengthen our friendships. They include:
- noticing and responding to emotions
- being an active listener
- providing support
- being present and showing that you care
- using non verbal cues to show your understanding and support.
- Offering words of encouragement to uplift others
Indigenous Incursion
We concluded National Reconciliation Week with an engaging and interactive Indigenous Incursion, where we learned about the rich cultural traditions, dances, songs, music, language and history of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Peoples from Far North Queensland. It was a meaningful and enriching experience that provided valuable insights into First Nations cultures. Students enthusiastically participated in the dancing and activities, making it a memorable and enjoyable celebration of learning.
This week our learning will include:
Reading: Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon novel study
Writing: Factual Recounts
Spelling: Digraph ‘ful ’ as in truthful
Maths: Addition & Subtraction
Inquiry: Understanding perspective by reflecting on how different people experience the same event differently.
