Foundation

Welcome to Week 6!
The next half of this term is really ramping up with lots of learning opportunities, especially our whole school production!
Literacy
Our Phonics focus this week continues with Yy and Zz, as well as a new set of tricky words for us to learn. FMW enjoyed sorting and chalk drawing a range of 'y' and 'z' pictures.
In Writing, we continue to work on forming our letters neatly, beginning from the correct starting point and making sure letters are sitting on the line or go under the line (think g, j, p, q, y and z). Foundation students practice their writing on whiteboards, on paper with ruled lines or even using chalk and shaving cream for extra fun!
Each week in Reading we focus on a mentor text and a range of activities to show our learning. These might be learning new vocabulary, sequencing events in the story, identifying what happens at the beginning / middle / end of a story or connecting with a character. Here are some work samples to show our learning growth!
Numeracy
Our focus for Numeracy has been all about "Friends of 10" to help with addition. We have combined collections using the part-part-whole relationship - 2 different parts that come together to make a bigger number (whole). A highlight was using the linking blocks to show numbers that combine to make 10. We then extended our work to number bonds - two numbers at the bottom join together to create one whole number.
Ask your child what is the friend of 2? 4? 7? 9? 10? 5? See how quickly they can answer!
Respectful Relationships
In one of our lessons, students were asked to share a time when they felt strong emotions like scared, tired, sad and angry. The next step is to learn about what they can say to themselves when they need to manage these strong emotions.
