Mathematics - Calculators in Year 10 & VCE
Jacinta Ryan
The use of CAS calculators forms an important part of Mathematics. It is assumed that students are using a CAS calculator in Year 12 examinations and SACs (except for Year 12 Foundation Mathematics).
It is a requirement that all students studying Year 10 Advanced or Mainstream Mathematics or VCE Mathematics have access to an approved calculator. Students studying Year 10 Advanced or Mainstream Mathematics or any Mathematics at Year 11, except Foundation Mathematics, need to purchase their own CAS calculator.
The calculators that are used are:
Year 10 Consolidating Mathematics | Scientific calculator |
Year 10 Mainstream Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 10 Advanced Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 11 Foundation Mathematics | Scientific calculator |
Year 11 General Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 11 Mathematical Methods | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 11 Specialist Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 12 Foundation Mathematics | Scientific calculator |
Year 12 General Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 12 Mathematical Methods | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
Year 12 Specialist Mathematics | TI-NspireCX II CAS calculator |
(Year 7, 8 and 9 students use a scientific calculator as per the booklist)
The calculators and other accessories can be ordered online at the Abacus calculators website. This must be completed by 27th October 2024. The details are shown below:
The items on the web portal are:
TINSPIRE CX II CAS calculator $240.00 inc GST
TI wall charger adaptor $12.00 inc GST
TI rechargeable battery (spare) $22.00 inc GST
TI USB data connectivity cable (spare) $19.95 inc GST
The portal/order form shows the latest model of TI-Nspire calculator – the CX II CAS calculator.
Please note that the only rechargeable battery that can be used in the TI-Nspire CX II CAS is the one that comes with the calculator. It needs to be charged using a computer or a wall charger adaptor for the TI-Nspire. I do recommend getting a wall charger as it is quicker to recharge your calculator using a wall charger rather than the computer. Some students may have lost their USB data cable that is used to charge their CAS calculators. If so, spare USB data cables can be ordered. Students who already have a TI-Nspire CX CAS may find that the rechargeable battery is no longer holding its charge. If this is the case, then order a new battery as they often only last about 12 to 18 months. Please make sure that you order the correct battery as there are two available. You will need to look at your current battery and order the same one. If you need the battery with wires (old one) then you will need to contact Abacus directly to specify that you need the one with wires after you have placed your order for a battery online. See the document on Knowledge Banks for diagrams of the batteries and calculators.
Please encourage your child to put the handbook, student software licence and the leads that come with the calculator in a safe place so that they can find them when they need to use them. Please ensure that your child has the calculator engraved with their name.
This information and the portal/order form details can also be accessed via the Parent Access Module on SIMON under Knowledge Banks, Mathematics – Calculators.
