Junior Legacy Public Speaking Competition

On the 11th of September, Shannon Mhasho travelled to Ballarat to represent the Hamilton region in the State Final of the Legacy Public Speaking competition.

There were 11 other competitors from around Victoria.

Shannon delivered a speech on the topic of mateship and placed first in the state. She will now progress to the Nationals, to be held in Ballarat in November.

As the winner yesterday, Shannon will be a guest speaker next April at a service to be conducted at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. This service generally attracts a crowd of 2000-3000 people.

Congratulations Shannon on your amazing achievement!

On Wednesday 11 September I went down to Ballarat to compete at the Junior Legacy Public Speaking Competition State Finals and won. I competed against 10 other students from schools all around Victoria like Portland, Warrnambool, Ballarat, Stawell and Kavina. My 5 minute prepared speech was about Mateship and the 2 minute impromptu speech topic for the day was colours. I spoke about "my life in colours" and what each colour makes me feel, think of and how it relates to my life.

The next steps for me are speaking at the National Finals in Ballarat in November as well as speaking on behalf of Legacy at the Remembrance Shrine sometime next year with a huge, expected crowd of 5000. A big thank you to my mum, family and Ms Barry for all the help and support and a shout of to Mrs Mailes who convinced me to try this out in Year 7. I know public speaking is scary to most but every once in a while,  give it a go.
