The Dance Program at BSC has continued to grow, with the cocurricular Dance Club running weekly alongside a range of extension activities and authentic performance opportunities. 

These experiences are designed to engage students at all levels, build confidence and skills, and encourage students to pursue their passion for movement and physical expression. Dance is also offered as a subject elective from Years 9 to12, providing students with further opportunities to develop their technical, creative and performance skills.

Benefits of Dance Education (Elective subject Years 9 to 12)

Dance encourages students to take creative risks, problem-solve, work as part of a team and develop a strong sense of self. The opportunity to move, choreograph, perform and belong to a supportive group can help students build confidence, reduce stress and develop a stronger sense of wellbeing, making it a valuable contribution to mental and physical health. It provides students with a positive outlet for self-expression, physical activity and connection with others. 

At BSC, Dance is a viable subject choice for students from Year 9 through to VCE. Students can develop their skills progressively while accessing a range of performance, leadership, industry and extension opportunities throughout their secondary schooling. Whether students aspire to pursue Dance professionally or simply want to develop their confidence and fitness levels, Dance provides a rewarding and engaging pathway.

Hip Hop Dance Intensive and Dance Club

Participating Dance Club students in Years 7 to 9 have rcently attended a Hip Hop Dance Intensive - six sessions at Transit Dance studio. Working with a hip hop dance specialist in a professional studio environment, students developed their hip hop technique and performance skills while collaborating with peers from other year levels. These talented students  will perform their work in this week's Performing Arts Gala. 

Stephanie Lake Dance Company Excursion

Earlier this year, an excursion to see the Stephanie Lake Dance Company, renowned for progressive works in contemporary performing arts, provided an exciting opportunity to explore the relationship between movement, sound and performance. The Company invited BSC’s Dance and Percussion students to attend a final rehearsal of their globally celebrated work, Manifesto, prior to its North American tour. The one-hour dance and music rehearsal demonstrated expert skill in the performance and integration of both drumming and contemporary dance creating a dynamic and memorable performance. 

Dance Captains – Student Leadership in Production

The Dance Captaincy Program was established as part of the school's annual musical production and is now an ongoing yearly opportunity. Dance Captains take on valuable leadership responsibilities, creating and supporting choreography and rehearsals with fellow performers while developing their own confidence and communication skills. This year’s dance captains were an integral part to the onstage choreography in Legally Blonde. To be considered for a Dance Captain role in 2027, you must be a member of the production cast and express interest via written application.
