It has been a busy and exciting few weeks at BSC as our school community comes together to navigate one of the most important processes in a student’s secondary journey — subject selection.

Our Years 9 & 10 Information Evening provided students and families with the opportunity to hear from school leaders about VCE and VCE Vocational Major pathways and gain a clearer understanding of the subject selection process. Our 2027 Year 11 Subject Selection Interview Day then gave students and families the chance to sit down with staff and receive personalised guidance as they considered their subject choices.

Rounding out our program of events, the Subject Expo provided Years 9 and 10 students and their families with the opportunity to speak directly with teachers about individual subjects and pathways in an open and welcoming environment.

Across the school, students have also participated in assemblies and dedicated Home Group sessions, taking time to reflect on their interests, strengths and aspirations. Through research, discussion and self-reflection, students are being encouraged to make informed choices and select subjects that are the right fit for them. It has been wonderful to see so many students and families actively engaged and invested in the process.

Subject selection looks different at each year level — and that is by design. For our Year 9 and 10 students, this is a time of exploration: an opportunity to cast a wide net, discover new passions and begin to develop a clearer understanding of their strengths and interests.

For students entering Years 11 and 12, the focus shifts towards specialisation, with students making more deliberate choices that align with their future goals and aspirations. Some students take this even further, accelerating their learning through the VCE Early Start program or commencing a university subject in Year 12 through our Higher Education Studies (HES) program. These opportunities reflect both the ambition and capability of our students.

We are pleased to share that Year 10 students have now submitted their selections, with Years 9 and 11 submitting theirs this week and Year 8 students set to complete the process this week.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge and commend every student who has taken part in the subject selection process. Choosing subjects can feel daunting — there are many options, different pathways and no shortage of questions — but it is also an exciting opportunity to think about the future and the possibilities ahead.

The research students undertake, the conversations they have with teachers and families, and the care they take in making their selections speak volumes about the thoughtful, motivated young people we are privileged to work with each day.
We look forward to seeing the many exciting directions our students take in 2027.
