Year 9 Bushwhacked students recently had the opportunity to visit the Common Ground Project in Freshwater Creek as part of the Get Your Hands Dirty Program. 

The Common Ground Project is a regenerative farm and social enterprise near Geelong that works to improve food security, provide community education, and create training and employment pathways for marginalised groups. The excursion gave students a valuable opportunity to learn about sustainable farming practices, food security, and the importance of producing food in environmentally responsible ways. During an interactive farm tour, students explored the property and discovered how regenerative farming methods can improve soil health, reduce environmental impact, and support local communities.

A highlight of the day was the hands-on workshop, where students rolled up their sleeves and contributed to a range of real farm projects. Working collaboratively, they gained practical experience while developing a deeper understanding of where food comes from and the effort required to produce fresh, healthy crops. Students assisted with a variety of tasks, including mulching, pruning, replanting trees, building a chicken coop, and other important farm maintenance activities. On top of this, students had the chance to meet some of the farm’s friendly animals, including the goats and resident farm dog, which proved to be a major highlight for many.

The excursion was not only an opportunity to learn about sustainability in action but also a chance for students to make a meaningful contribution to the environment and the wider community. Through their hard work and enthusiasm, the students helped support the ongoing work of the Common Ground Project while gaining valuable insights into responsible land management and food production.
