Teacher - Business Management

Our Year 11 Business Management students have been exploring marketing and the strategies businesses use to attract customers, build strong brands and remain competitive. As part of this unit, students have been learning about the 7Ps of marketing: product, price, place, promotion, people, process and physical evidence.

Students recently put this learning into practice during a fieldwork excursion to Sydney Road, where they observed how local businesses apply these marketing strategies in a real-world setting. Working in small groups, students visited a range of businesses and considered how each one presented its products, promoted its brand and created an experience for customers.

Throughout the excursion, students completed a fieldwork booklet comparing two or three businesses. They recorded observations about pricing, store layout, customer service, promotional strategies, location, branding and the overall physical presentation of each business. Students were encouraged to think critically about how these decisions can influence customer behaviour and contribute to a business’s success.

The excursion provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect the marketing concepts explored in class with practical examples within their local community. It also encouraged them to look at familiar businesses through a different lens, considering the many deliberate decisions that influence a customer’s experience.

Back in the classroom, students will use the information and evidence gathered during the excursion to support their upcoming assessment task. They will create a unique product, develop a marketing strategy using the 7Ps and justify how their decisions will help attract and engage their chosen target market.
