Senior Girls Soccer Team Qualifies for State Finals

The BSC Senior Girls Soccer team has secured a place in the State Finals after an outstanding performance at the Regional Championships.

Competing against seven other schools, BSC was drawn into a group of four, with the top team progressing to the Regional Final and a chance to qualify for the State Finals.

BSC was off to a strong start, defeating St Helena Secondary College 4–1 in their opening match. They followed this with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Hume Grammar. While BSC dominated possession and created numerous opportunities, Hume Grammar’s goalkeeper kept the score line close.

In their final group match, BSC produced a dominant display against Sirius College, securing a convincing 10–2 victory. Three wins from three matches saw BSC progress to the Regional Final against Thornbury Secondary College.

Both teams began cautiously, but BSC gradually took control of the match and went into half-time with a 2–0 lead. They continued to dictate play in the second half, limiting Thornbury’s opportunities and maintaining their composure. A final score of 4–1 secured the Regional Championship and a place in the State Finals.

A particularly impressive aspect of the team’s success was the contribution of several younger players. Due to injuries, the team included three Year 8 students — Katelyn Lumsden, Solei Nino and Lili Edwards — and Year 9 student Attilia Agnesi, alongside students from Years 10, 11 and 12. The younger players stepped up brilliantly and made a significant contribution to the team’s success.  

All players contributed strongly throughout the tournament, led by captain McKayla Kassab. Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding achievement and for representing BSC with such skill, determination and teamwork.

Making it to State [Finals] for school soccer is such an amazing achievement and something we should all be proud of. We came together on the day, played our best and managed to make it all the way to State. We’re so grateful to the teachers who have supported us and helped make this opportunity happen. 

It’s an amazing experience to represent our school and play together.

It was wonderful to come together and play as a team. The team includes students from a range of year levels, all there to play, have fun and, of course, win! 

Playing alongside students from different year levels was a great experience, and we had the opportunity to get to know one another while sharing plenty of fun moments on the field and interacting with students from other schools. When mistakes were made, we encouraged each other, which showed the great teamwork and persistence within our team. I hope everyone had the same experience I did, because it was wonderful.

This has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences I’ve had through soccer — our journey from the Division Championships to Regionals and now on to the State Championships.

Our journey began at the Division Championships, where we knew that every player had to give their best if we wanted to progress. Each match was another opportunity to prove ourselves and, after a series of strong performances, we won the round and earned our place at the Regional Championships.

Qualifying for Regionals was already a huge achievement, but we knew the competition would get tougher. As the Regional tournament progressed, my confidence continued to grow. I found myself getting into strong attacking positions, creating scoring opportunities and contributing more to the team with every match.

One of the highlights of the tournament was scoring several goals, which was an incredible feeling. Every goal reminded me that all the hours of training, practice and hard work were paying off. It also gave me greater confidence in my own ability and encouraged me to keep pushing myself, stay composed under pressure and believe in what I could achieve.

Qualifying for State is a reward for the hard work, commitment and teamwork we have shown throughout the competition.

Looking back, the journey from Divisional competition to Regional finals has already been an unforgettable experience. It has taught me the importance of perseverance, confidence and teamwork, while giving me the opportunity to contribute to my team’s success. I can’t wait to represent our school at the State Championships and see what our team can achieve next.
