Spring Concert

Our 2026 Spring Concert was a wonderful celebration of the achievements of our students, and we were incredibly proud of the effort, commitment and musicianship they demonstrated. Every ensemble performed superbly, showcasing the progress they have made throughout the year and the importance of working together as a team. Our three Year 12 musicians, Tara Haigh, Maisy Woodhouse and Katerina Zouzoulas, did an outstanding job as comperes, confidently guiding the audience through the evening. 

Behind the scenes, our student backstage crew also played an important role in the smooth running of the concert, building on the confidence and skills they developed through technical rehearsal training the previous week, led by Mr Eric Ho. We were particularly proud of our Year 12 students who have contributed to the Music program throughout their six-year journey at MGSC, and whose commitment, leadership and musicianship have helped shape our ensembles and the wider Music community.

A special part of the evening was being able to give Mr Peter Blick a fitting farewell and acknowledge his extraordinary 31 years of service to MGSC. We extend our sincere thanks to Peter for the contribution he has made to generations of students and to the development of our Music program. We would also like to acknowledge all our Music staff for their expertise, energy and commitment throughout the year, and thank our College Councillors, Principal team members and non music staff who also helped out,  for their ongoing support of the Music program and events such as the Spring Concert. Most importantly, thank you to our parents and families for supporting your children by coming along, listening and celebrating what they have worked so hard to achieve. We encourage families to complete the Google Form below to provide feedback on aspects of the event, which will help us with our planning for future concerts.

Disney+ Concert

Our vocal students, led by Blanka West, gave a light and bright concert featuring favourites from Disney films and much-loved musicals.  A lunchtime treat for a supportive audience. 

Gig Night

We are delighted to hold this event this week with the support of the Mentone Life Saving Club as our host venue. The 'Gig Night' sees student musicans playing for family and friends in a casual atmosphere with meal on offer.  For many Year 12s it is their last performance as MGSC students after six years together.  Thanks for a great night everyone. 

VSMF- Victorian Schools Music Festival

Congratulations to our Senior Strings, Year 8 Band and Symphonic Band, who all represented MGSC at the Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF). Senior Strings performed earlier in the term, followed by our two bands more recently, each presenting a prepared program to an audience of ensembles from other schools. A particularly valuable aspect of the Festival is the opportunity for students to work directly with an adjudicator on stage. After hearing each performance, the adjudicator discusses aspects of the ensemble’s playing with the students and works through selected sections of the repertoire, demonstrating how small changes can further enhance the overall performance. Students also benefit from hearing other school ensembles perform a wide range of repertoire, sometimes even the same pieces, and listening closely to recognise the different ways ensembles interpret and perform the music. These opportunities to perform, listen, reflect and learn from others are an important part of developing as a musician. Congratulations to all three ensembles on their performances and the commitment they showed in preparing for the Festival. The Year 8 Band directed by Mr Eric Ho and Ms Bella Winter, received a Gold Award. The Senior Strings Directed by Mr Liam Cullen and the Symphonic Band directed by Ms Wendy Harvey, both received a Bronze in the more advanced sections. Our Year 7 Bands will have their opportunity to take part when they attend the Junior Section of VSMF in November. 

Looking After Our Musical Instruments

A reminder to all students who use school instruments: please take care of them! Our instrumental program relies on a large collection of school-owned instruments, and the cost of repairing and maintaining this equipment is becoming a significant expense for the school. Repairs to some of our larger instruments can cost more than $1,000.

Accidents do happen, and we understand that instruments can sometimes be damaged despite being handled carefully. However, instruments should always be carried, stored and used with care. Where damage occurs as a result of an instrument being dropped or handled carelessly, a contribution towards the repair costs will be sought. Looking after school instruments helps us keep them available for everyone and ensures that our budget can continue to support music opportunities for students.
