Celebrating Our Learning in Term 3
Term 3 has been a wonderful term of rich learning across Skye Primary School. From exploring our history and culture to investigating scientific ideas, developing mathematical thinking and engaging deeply with literature, our students have continued to build the knowledge, skills and understanding that underpin their learning.
Foundation students explored Giraffes Can't Dance, Farmer John's Tractor and Are We There Yet?. They developed their understanding of movement and the features of plants and animals in Science, while in Mathematics they strengthened their addition and subtraction, sharing and grouping, and counting and place value skills.
Year 1 students explored Where the Forest Meets the Sea, Looking After Country With Fire and Wombat Stew. Their learning provided rich opportunities to connect Geography, First Nations perspectives and sustainability. In Science, students investigated actions that make sound, while Mathematics focused on patterns, sharing and grouping, addition and subtraction, and measuring length.
Year 2 students delved into The First Scientists, Great Inventions, The City of Light, and Curiosity: The Story of the Mars Rover. These studies brought together history, science, technology, sustainability and First Nations perspectives. In Mathematics, students developed their understanding of operations and fractions.
Year 3 students travelled back in time through their studies of Ancient Rome and Modern Democracy. Science learning explored solids and liquids and gases. In Mathematics, students continued to develop their number and mathematical thinking through their Term 3 learning, with a strong focus on consolidating key skills and applying them in increasingly complex ways.
Year 4 students explored Aboriginal Life and the text Uncle Xbox, developing their understanding of First Nations perspectives, sustainability and technology. Science investigations explored climate and weather and motion. In Mathematics, students worked with multiplication and division, fractions and decimals.
Year 5 students immersed themselves in The Last Bear, providing a powerful context for exploring sustainability, the environment and the relationship between humans and the natural world. Students also developed their understanding through poetry and persuasive writing, while Science included learning about states of matter and changes to the Earth's surface. In Mathematics, students worked with decimals, fractions, decimals and percentages, and operations.
Year 6 students explored the Industrial Revolution and From Colonies to Federation, building their understanding of history, democracy, citizenship and Australia's development. Science investigations included electrical circuits and renewable materials. In Mathematics, students deepened their understanding of decimals, fractions, decimals and percentages, and operations.
Across every year level, it has been fantastic to see students building on what they already know, making connections between subjects and developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Building knowledge has a powerful impact on reading comprehension. The more students know about a topic, the more easily they can understand, connect and make meaning from what they read. This is why a carefully sequenced and coherent literacy and numeracy curriculum is so important: each new learning experience builds on what came before, strengthening the foundations students need for increasingly complex learning.
We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, effort and enthusiasm our students have shown throughout Term 3.
