One week left to apply for Cape York immersion

A wonderful opportunity exists in 2027 - our school’s inaugural Cape York First Nations Service-Learning Immersion in partnership with Red Earth.

This immersion was initially offered to current Year 9 and Year 10 students, however following strong interest from students in other year groups and confirmation of our increased staffing for the tour, we are delighted to have extended this opportunity to current Year 8 and Year 11 students as well. This means the immersion is now open to current Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students who will be entering Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 in 2027.

The immersion is designed to provide students with a meaningful opportunity to connect with First Nations communities, culture and Country through authentic relationship-building, cultural learning and service. The program will include opportunities to stay on Country with Traditional Owners, learn directly from Elders and community members, contribute to community-led projects, take part in cultural activities, and explore significant natural environments such as Cape York, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

A key focus of the immersion is not simply travel, but connection. Students will be encouraged to approach the experience with curiosity, respect and openness as they learn more about First Nations culture, community, sustainability and reconciliation in action.

Expressions of Interest remain open for students wishing to be considered for the immersion.  As places are limited, students are required to complete an application form and submit the required deposit by next Friday, 14 August.  This is the final deadline for applications and initial deposits to be received.

Submitting an Expression of Interest does not guarantee a place on the immersion. 

Applications will be reviewed following the closing date to ensure students understand the commitment involved and are well suited to the expectations of the experience.

This is an incredibly exciting step forward in our Service-Learning program at St George’s. Opportunities such as this allow students to grow in empathy, independence, resilience, leadership and cultural understanding, while also developing a deeper awareness of their role within the wider Australian community.

We look forward to seeing the final applications come through and are excited about the meaningful learning and personal growth this immersion may provide for our students in 2027.

Hoodies for Homelessness and Anglicare WA School SleepOut

On Friday 14 August, our school community will take part in Hoodies for Homelessness, raising awareness and much-needed funds for youth homelessness in Western Australia. 

Students are invited to wear their favourite hoodie over the top of their school uniform and bring a gold coin donation, which will be donated to our School Sleep Out fundraising quest.  Families are also welcome to donate online using the QR code on the event poster or the following link: Team St George's - School Sleep Out 2026

This initiative supports the important work of Anglicare WA, including services that assist young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It particularly supports the Street Connect Bus which parks each evening at the top of Hay Street, just across the road from our William Street Campus to offer much needed advice and support to young people struggling with homelessness.

For many young people, homelessness does not always mean sleeping on the street. It can involve couch surfing, staying in unsafe or unstable accommodation, or not knowing where they will sleep from one night to the next. Through this event, we hope to encourage students to reflect on the importance of having a safe and secure place to call home.

Later that same day, our Anglicare Ambassadors will take part in the Anglicare WA School Sleep Out, held this year at the WACA Ground. Our students will give up the comfort of their warm beds for the night and sleep out in the cold to gain a deeper understanding of some of the challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness. Throughout the evening, they will take part in activities designed to build empathy, awareness and understanding, while also raising vital funds for Anglicare WA.

This year, our school has set a fundraising goal of $4,000, and we would love the support of our wider school community in helping our students reach this target. Every donation, no matter the size, contributes to supporting young people in need across Western Australia.

We are incredibly proud of our Anglicare Ambassadors for their willingness to take part in such a meaningful event. By braving the winter weather, sleeping out at the WACA, and fundraising for this important cause, they are helping to shine a light on youth homelessness and make a real difference in our community.
