Year 2 News

What’s been happening in Grade 2 recently?
As inquirers and learners, we have been learning about Resilience and what that means. We discussed how resilience helps us keep trying, solve problems, and stay positive when we face challenges.
We participated in an online session with the Kids Helpline, where we learned about ways to be resilient when things feel difficult. During the session, students explored strategies such as talking to a trusted adult, taking calm breaths, and thinking of possible solutions to a problem. These ideas helped us understand that challenges are a normal part of learning and that there are helpful ways we can respond when things don’t go as planned.
As mathematicians, we have been continuing to develop our understanding of time. We have been looking specifically at quarter past and quarter to times, which many of us found a little tricky! To help us learn, we labelled the parts of an analogue clock face and talked about how the hour hand and minute hand move. We coloured in the positions for quarter past and quarter to on a clock to help us visualise where the hands should be. We then had lots of opportunities to practise reading, making, and drawing different quarter past and quarter to times. These activities helped us build our confidence when telling the time on an analogue clock.
As readers and writers, we have been focussing on understanding the texts we read and writing about them. We have been building our comprehension skills by discussing our favourite parts of the stories, retelling the main events, and thinking carefully about what is happening in the text. Some of us have also been practising predicting what might happen next in a story and explaining our ideas.
*To support all learners, we worked on a range of differentiated tasks that were tailored to students’ needs. These activities helped students practise their reading and writing skills at a level that supports their learning and builds their confidence when responding to texts.
On Friday, we enjoyed a very special Hot Food Lunch! We had delicious margarita pizza followed by ice cream for dessert. Everyone was very excited, and it was lovely to share lunchtime together as a class. A big thank you to the Parents and Friends for organising this for us. We all went home with very full and happy bellies!
As bucketfillers, our amazing grade 2 students decided to take action and clean up the school after our hot lunch day. We collected all the pizza boxes in the junior buildings and cleared all of Hawthorn Yard and Saunders Yard of rubbish.
A huge well done as well to all the 2SH students who participated in last week's assembly. Everybody did an amazing job learning their parts and standing up in front of the school. Congratulations!
This week, we will be learning about:
- Numeracy: Addition
- Reading: Meaning making from texts
- Spelling: The trigraph /air/ making the sound "air" as in hair
- Writing: Writing about Reading
- Inquiry: Ways to be healthy and Harmony Week
- Religion: Catholic Education Week
If you would like to donate to the Easter Raffle, we are still collecting small gifts (chocolates, sweats, small toys, Easter craft, etc.). The class with the most donated items will get 30 minutes of extra play time!
Have a great week!
