Engaging with Literature: Year 7 Students Explore Blueback

This year, we have introduced a number of new texts to support student engagement, provide achievable learning challenges and deepen their understanding of real-world issues.

Our Year 7 students are currently reading and unpacking a new novel to the college, Tim Winton’s Blueback and have been highly engaged in the novel’s themes, leading to rigorous discussions. Blueback explores environmental conservation, family, and connection to place. Students are examining how Winton highlights the need to protect the natural world, particularly the ocean, through the protagonist Abel’s deep bond with the sea and a friendly blue groper. The novel raises concerns about greed and exploitation, contrasting Abel’s respect for nature with the destructive actions of others.

Throughout this study, students are reflecting on sustainability, personal responsibility, and the impact of human actions on the environment, fostering both critical thinking and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
