Please meet Gilbert Magart and Daniel Le, two dedicated students who have been selected to study a Certificate II in Engineering at Swinburne University as part of their VCE studies. This exciting opportunity allows them to gain hands-on experience in the field, develop technical skills, and take a significant step toward their future careers.

Gilbert and Daniel share their journey with us—what inspired them to pursue engineering, the challenges they've overcome, and their goals for the future.

Our VET course, VET Engineering Studies II, is an exciting and hands-on program that allows us to develop fundamental engineering skills while attending sessions at Swinburne University in Wantirna. This course spans two years and introduces us to the essential building blocks of engineering, providing both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in working with tools, machinery, and engineering design.

In our first year, we have been learning how to safely handle basic tools and machinery, which is crucial for any engineering work. Safety is a top priority, and we are taught the correct procedures for using hand tools, power tools, and workshop equipment. We also focus on engineering drawings, such as orthogonal projections, isometric sketches, and detailed design drawings. These are fundamental skills that will help us visualize and create precise engineering components in the future. This project was a fantastic introduction to precision work, tool handling, and the importance of accuracy in engineering.

In the second year of our VET course, we will take on even more creative and independent projects. We will have the opportunity to think up and design our own unique engineering creations, such as a shield or other custom items of our choosing. This phase of the course will allow us to apply everything we have learned so far while exploring our creativity and engineering problem-solving skills.

Both students chose this course to broaden their subject selections and explore their passion for engineering. A big bonus? The opportunity to try welding—something they were both eager to experience! They love the variety of tasks they complete and the wide range of tools they get to work with, applying their learning to real-life situations. Since the course runs on Wednesday afternoons, Gilbert and Adam have had to stay diligent in keeping up with any missed classwork however they advised that their teachers have been incredibly supportive, ensuring they receive updates and resources to stay on track. Looking ahead, both students aspire to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF)—whether that means learning a trade or working with tanks, they’re excited about the future opportunities that lie ahead.

A huge thank you to Daniel and Gilbert in Year 11 for sharing insights into their VET journey.

With over 40 different VET programs available, choosing the right one for your pathway is an important decision. Exploring your options can help you find the best fit for your future goals!

This is a great opportunity to also mention that Scoresby Secondary College offer VET Delivered in Secondary Schools (VETDSS) programs here on site, providing students with valuable industry-recognized qualifications. Held on campus, we offer a Certificate III in Music, where students develop essential skills in music performance and production, as well as a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics, and Recreation, equipping students with hands-on experience in the sports and fitness industry.

These programs are fantastic additions for our senior students, not only allowing them to study an area of interest but also giving them a head start in their chosen industries with a nationally recognized accreditation.

More conversations around these options as part of our VCE program will be delivered to students as they start to consider their future pathways and options as the year progresses.

Talking about future Pathways, our YEAR 9 students completed their Morrisby profiling during the last week of term in readiness for their 1:1 meetings at the start of term 2.

Morrisby profiling plays a big role in the careers development here at Scoresby Secondary as it assist students in:

Personalised Career Guidance – It assesses students' interests, strengths, and abilities to suggest career and study options that align with their skills.

Supports Subject Selection – It helps students choose VCE, VET, subjects that match their career aspirations and strengths.

Boosts Self-Awareness – Students gain a clearer understanding of their abilities, learning styles, and potential career paths.

Encourages Early Planning – By identifying suitable careers early, students can set clear goals and take the right steps towards their future.

Reduces Decision-Making Stress – With structured insights, students feel more confident in their choices, making transitions into senior schooling and beyond smoother.
